An asteroid hit Earth

I know you people mean well, but PUH-LEASE!

One meteorite is not the sign of end times or Christ's return.
If we start seeing this happen on a regular basis, I'd change my attitude.

But at this point, while very interesting - it's all a big 'yawn' to me. An interesting scientific event, but also, just a distraction.
While it WAS a pretty good 'boom', this was NOTHING, folks! It disintegrated well above the ground and pales in comparison to the last such event, 104 years ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunguska_event

It was just a piece of debris that ended up on a collision course with the earth. PLEASE stop acting like people from the middle ages. So a few thousand pounds of rock came outta the sky? Who cares?????

If God wants to show us a 'sign', there will be no doubt that He is speaking.
Agreed.
And, pretty much my thoughts when some people claimed Hurricane Sandy was God's judgement.

Anyway, rather than a case of 'maybe it is, maybe it isn't', it's fulfilled prophecy that brings the real encouragement, right?

Blessings.

Well said! If these types of meteorite events happened on a daily or weekly basis, THEN I would say it could be a "sign."

When those signs come, there will be NO questions about it. Those who don't believe in God will be frantic, and those who do will know what they mean.

No cause for concern when one large rock blasts into our atmosphere. However; When dozens of rocks begin to pour in over a consistent basis, then we will know.

Can't believe I forgot to post this passage relative to whether or not this is "judgment" or "a sign."
Luke 13 NASB
1 Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
2 And Jesus said to them, "Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered this fate?
3 "I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
4 "Or do you suppose that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them were worse culprits than all the men who live in Jerusalem?
5 "I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish."
There is no judgment until the Tribulation. Jesus was warning the disciples in this passage to be concerned about their own salvation, not that of others who apparently, by our standards, have no hope of heaven. When we come to that conclusion, we're dead wrong.

Does anyone know when the last time a meteor caused this much damage on earth?

As far as I know, it has been around 100 years since a meteor that size has made contact with our atmosphere. Not large enough to do serious damage, but still scary none the less. In 1908, a much larger meteorite struck Tunguska. Luckily, the area was basically uninhabited. None the less, that meteorite completely decimated the surrounding forest. It was 1000 times stronger than the blast in Hiroshima.

On a side note, had we actually been hit by the meteor that was predicted to pass our earth. We probably would not be here to talk about it. If I am not mistaken, that meteor was large enough to either instantly evaporate our oceans or create a dust cloud that would envelope the earth.

Not to mention 1,500 injuries and no deaths? Is that weird to anyone. 3,000 damaged buildings, flying glass shooting out everywhere and not one death. It makes you think and be grateful at the same time.

It is strange, but I am happy none the less. That's 1,500 lives that still have the opportunity to come to Christ (if they haven't already).

Could have been a wake up call from God for all we know. Just when you think your safe, he sends a rock the size of a school bus into your neighborhood :P

Go back to my first post in this thread. There is a link to the "big one" early in the last century. Now THAT was luck, had that come down in any inhabited area, the death toll could have been awful!

The reason for no deaths this time was partly luck (or divine guidance) - and partly because nothing really hit the earth. The size of the object and it's trajectory meant that it broke up at altitude. All damage was done just by the shock wave.
