I'm just now finally re-reading Acts. OK. What gives with these two? They sold some land, kept back a portion of it, lied about that, and were struck dead.

Seems a bit...harsh?
 
they lied to Yhwh. Yhwh does as He pleases. He gave them all they had, they should have told the truth.

It was the very beginning of the Church and a pivotal point in time when people needed to understand the importance of being part of Christs Body imo. Being indwelt with the Holy Spirit brings responsibility and Ananais and Sapphira had let satan take priority because they had this love of money sinful nature imo. Yahweh disciplines harshly when necessary.

Act 5:11 KJV And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.
