Angels in my ears

humble soul

On Sabbatical from Rome
Member
A good angel in my left ear, a bad angel in my right.
God on my left,Satan on my right.

That was a simple formula I heard as a child.
The bad angel tempts you to sin. The good angel reminds you of your responsibility. Your obligation.
The adult versus the child. Is it that simple?

But sometimes the bad angel is right. You need to relax. You need to let go of the control freak adult. The adult can be a bully. A party pooper. No fun. Too serious. Too rational. Too logical .
My conclusion? Don't dismiss the bad angel every time. Sometimes he has a valuable part to play . Sometimes giving in to temptation is not such a bad thing. Example?
Having a few beers at Christmas time. Relax. Get someone else to drive. If we neglect the child within, we shrivel up. And become a lifeless adult. A pain in the neck.
When the adult or child in us wants to control the other, we have a problem. Child and adult need to work as a team. Together. Happiness is possible.

Depending on what we view as sin, it is part of the fabric of our life. The worst sin is murder? No the worst sin is hatred. Self hatred and non acceptance of others.
And I'm not suggesting sex, drugs and alcohol are good. It's decadent and shows lack of respect for self and others. I am perhaps suggesting they aren't abominable. The prodigal son returns from a life of decadence. Humbled by his sin and lack of commonsense. The older brother , who plays by the rules , and looks like the good guy in the story is in fact the worst sinner.
What I take from that story is pride is the root of bad sin. Pride caused the brother to be jealous of the younger brothers good treatment by the father.
The prodigal son had arrived at a humble state. That's what we all need to aim for.

I will never give the devil a foothold in my being.

No, the Spirit of God, (given to me after my repentance from sin and baptism in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of past sins), is in control.
Ok. That might be good. On the other hand, it might also make you severely serious.

Oh, wah. That's a terrible way to think. Basically, you just called God a control freak. This belies how little you know Him. How many years has it been since you dusted off your Bible and read it?

I've heard the good angel bad angel fairy tale. The Cherokee Indians call them the two Wolves which fight. Others say one is your conscience and the other your Carnal Mind. These two can never agree or work together as a team. You would know that if you picked up your Bible.

Cut the dose, Brother!!! :lol

It's the all or nothing approach to sin ((that hopeful so strongly advocates) ,
Which I challenge. And actually disagree. Trying to be too pure leads to being puritanical. Cut people some slack.
God didn't come to save us from sin. He came to save us from being too serious. Being too proud. Beings perfectionist. Too legalistic. And being too hateful .

Sounds to me like you're trying to justify imperfect behavior. God's requirement is for us to be perfectly righteous and that is what we must strive to achieve. Yes, it is true that we have proven to God and ourselves that we are not capable of succeeding on our own and therefore we need Jesus to help us along the way, but, that is no excuse nor justification for our unrighteousness. God will not be mocked.

“You shall not have in your bag differing weights, a heavy and a light. You shall not have in your house differing measures, a large and a small. You shall have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure, that your days may be lengthened in the land which the Lord your God is giving you. For all who do such things, all who behave unrighteously, are an abomination to the Lord your God."
Deuteronomy 25:13-16 NKJV

The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
Psalm 19:7 NKJV

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your [p]brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect."
Matthew 5:43-48 NKJV

For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
Hebrews 10:26 NKJV

To him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
James 4:17 NKJV

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh;....Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:16-17, 19-21 NKJV

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.
Galatians 6:7-8 NKJV

Sounds to me like you're trying to justify imperfect behavior.
Think about that one again Wip. It's called self acceptance. Which leads to acceptance of others.
Actually self acceptance leads to better behaviour anyway.
If you condemn yourself for not reaching high standards, you will condemn others.

We are called to Be holy as God is holy as we walk in obedience to His commands, which are not hard to follow.

1Peter 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
1Peter 1:14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
1Peter 1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
1Peter 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
1Peter 1:17 And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:
1Peter 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
1Peter 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
1Peter 1:20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
1Peter 1:21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.
1Peter 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
1Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

Did he Puritans teach that a man could live without sin, like Jesus did?
