Any horror movie fans?

Lewis, I love you too brother. You really are a sugar. But let me ask you this: does a story about good vs. evil have to be so graphic to be entertaining? Why the indulgence in blood and gore?

Love the old Hammer productions and American International films. Anything with Vincent Price, Chris Lee and Peter Cushing in it! And, for those who think all such movies are evil, believe it or not they can really reaffirm godly principles. But, as Lewis points out, if you feel it is sin to watch such movies, then do not. I would guess this thread is more for those to whom such movies are OK.

I just watched a Vincent Price/Chris Lee movie last night, "The Oblong Box", based on a story by Poe.

You're right. I gave my opinion and inadvertently turned it into a debate. My apologies. :sorry

I've been a fan of horror films for as long as I can remember.
My favs are still the old Universal classics. That was good film making. Also enjoy the Hammer films of the 50's, 60's, and early 70's.
Have to say that most modern horror films leave me disinterested. Too many of them rely on gore and cheap shock at the expense of story and character development.
Did enjoy the first two Saw films. After that the franchise, imo, went downhill.
Was looking forward to the remake of The Wolfman, although it has now beem postponed to a 2010 release.

Well, naturally. I certainly don't mean to tell anyone how to live. I just have strong feelings about this and don't mind voicing my opinion. I've seen firsthand what certain evil forms of entertainment can do to someone. It's not pretty. Evil is not fun, it is not harmless.

I'm with you on this one. We should not be living like the world and filling our minds with senseless violence and blood all in the name of "entertainment".

When I became a Christian and learned God's truths, I did a serious revaluation of the things I was watching on television and movies.

This certainly is not a salvation issues, however, continuing to live like the world after salvation calls into question our love for God verses our love to be entertained with what is acceptable to the unsaved world (sex, bad language, violence, and so on). It should not be a free-for-all with the TV and movies we watch just because we have liberty in Christ. To have maturity in Christ we need to show some better discernment than the heathens who have no truth in their life.

This is the litmus test I use. If I am unsure whether a movie or program is appropriate, I imagine my senior pastor sitting next to me. Would I feel uncomfortable watching a program with him sitting right there? If so, it's time to change the channel. This is also true for TV/movies loaded with sex, foul language, and all other Ungodly activity.

Better yet, what if Jesus were in the room? Isn't He?

JoJo,

I'm with you on this one 100%.

A while back someone started a thread entitled: "Should Christians watch the Chain Saw Massacre?" Here is what I posted as my response to that thread, and I think it's appropriate for this thread also:
.

  • Emphasis mine

    Luke 4:1- 14
1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.
3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:
10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:
11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: ...

The devil offered Jesus ALL
the things of this world (apples)

Nothin' but apples folks!

I firmly believe that it is NOT appropriate for people who claim to have the HOLY SPIRIT LIVING IN THEM THROUGH THEM, THEM NOW BEING THE HOLY TEMPLE OF GOD... should ever watch or participate in any from of "entertainment" that is OF an evil nature JUST FOR THE "FUN" of it. :o

Why would anyone think that to WATCH EVIL is a "FUN" or "ENTERTAINING" thing to do?????? :confused DOING SO IS TOTALLY contradictory to HAVING THE HOLY SPIRIT LIVING IN YOU AND THROUGH YOU. The Holy Spirit rebukes the ungoly things of this world NOT invokes them!
Some people think it nothing to entertain fortune tellers, or astrology, or porn, or fighting, or dog fights, or violence of any type. Does that make it okay according to the guiding of the HOLY SPIRIT? I would think... NOT. :nono

I posted this in the Should Christians watch the Chain Saw Maccacre? Thread and I'll post it here also:

.

The Lord God wants us to know about the wiles of the devil, but he doesn't want us to sit and fantasize with him while watching the ritual of wickedness, that's entertaining evil spirits. And I don't want to "entertain" evil anything. It' bad enough we have to overcome the evil that comes in front of us, why would I want to go into the den of the devil and let him entertain me with his wickedness even if it is just fantasy? Satan the devil enters in through the mind by means of presenting lies, telling us that what God says is not to be taken seriously. He did it to Eve and so many others who didn't take the world of the Lord God seriously. You can't play with the devil and expect that you'll not be pulled into his den of deception and misleading. Satan the devil, the presenter of evil, makes everything he offers to seem as if it's only "fun" and harmless. Otherwise would anyone be attracted? NO! That's how he gets people to become insensitive to evil, the more you see the less you are repulsed by it. The Perverted spirit inflicts perversion upon the unsuspecting and upon the unguarded. We are told in Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Wiles is another word for method... The method of the devil. We are to put on the whole armour, not part of it. Not always an easy thing to do when we turn our back on the Holy Spirit to give pleasure to the entertaining of the carnal and the evil things that appear to be of little or no harm, aye? :oops We all need to face the fact that there are shameful things that must be avoided for our own good. If we don't know how the devil comes to on the sly, sneak, to trick and deceive, then it only gives way to belittle the warnings of the Lord about staying away from participating with the things of the spirit of the fallen one and those that follow him. Does the Lord God tell us to go and sit in the company of the devil and watch him place his evil fantasies into our head? That is toying/playing/participating in the looking at pictures/visuals the devil makes. Ponography does no less. Perversion works firstly, by making the intended target to become perverted, to become insensitive to the evil of it. To come and be a part of his evil delight. Watching horror movies is nothing less than participating in twisted evil-fantasies of fallen angels nothing other than wicked spirits. If you watch porn are you participating in the fantasies of porn. So then, are you participating in the fantasies of demon spirits by watching the fantasies they present to you to “entertain†you. Nope, the wiles of the devil are not my idea of “entertainmentâ€Â. devil = evil spirit. If you want to hang out with the spirit that presents horror, evil, wickedness.... then is that being Chirst-like? Is that being OF the HOLY SPIRIT OF CHRIST? OR are you laying aside your Christ-ian-ity so you can "participate" in some wicked fantasy that is nothing but he mind-set of the evil spirit that made it. Beware of what you say is nothing but harmless fun. Wicked spirits are not harmless fun. It's no less than participating in porn. Can't say evil is not evil and then sit in the den of the devil and say... awe, it's just fantasy. :bigfrown That thinking stinks to high hell, and it is the inplant of demonic spirits.

Where does it teach us in the bible to fill our minds with images of murder, horror, torture, gore, violence and other satanic activities?

Where in the bible does it teach us to entertain visions of such garbage?

What, are we part time Christians putting the things of God aside while we go off to watch the things of the devil?

Is it the Holy Spirit that prompts you to watch such garbage?

Garbage In ... Garbage Out.

I don't know about you but I don't live by the worlds standards of "entertainment".

Just because the "worldly" label it as Entertainment doesn't mean that Christians are supposed to accept it as "entertainment" It is nothing but vile and perverted garbage. Foul mouthed comedy is considered "entertainment" to some people, does that make it okay?

Again,
Where does it teach us in the bible to fill our minds with images of murder, horror, torture, gore, violence and other satanic activities?

Where in the bible does it teach us to entertain visions of such garbage?

What, are we part time Christians putting the things of God aside while we go off to watch the things of the devil?

I have two words: Salem's Lot! (the one from 1979 of course; with the awesome Mr. Barlow). I am a very conservative Christian, but I love horror movies. Maybe there is something wrong with me, but I can't get enough. I agree with JoJo in one respect. Many so-called horror movies are just vile pieces of trash, and evil (along the same lines as a lot of secular music that advocates sinful behavior). But well thought out, well written horror (many times written by very religious writers) is great stuff. During the Tribulation, Christians will be experiencing their own nasty horror movie, so mentally preparing is a good thing :D. You know what they say, the Lily that spends its life in the greenhouse is weak when faced with the real natural elements that exist outside its artificial environment. A "Hothouse Lily" is useless. Sometimes graphically seeing what martyrs experienced during the Inquisition lets us know that things were not always sitting in a comfortable pew, dressed to the nines, and looking down at "the bad people" who cuss and stuff. Things are going to get rough and bloody folks. I just hope these Hothouse Lilies have what it takes to face the elements. Preparation never hurts, as long as it's done with tact and honesty :nod
