Are you a person who likes to get the last word in?

? :erm

There is a tendency within me to want the last word on an issue, but I consistently deny myself that "pleasure." I make a distinction between necessary things and things that seem to have the importance of asking how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. I avoid the latter, which I refer to as "pinhead theology" or "pinhead discussions." There are too many important things for humanity to be concerned with to worry about pointless matters.

Nope. It actually kind of bothers me when I do take the last word. Maybe God's trying to tell me something? :rolleyes

It depends on the subject. If the subject has not been clearly understood, yes. It depends on if the person is wrong. In that case, definitely.

There are times when I am absolutely positive I'm right but I refrain, allowing my dh to have the last word. However, he knows by the expression on my face :squint that I don't agree. Turns out sometimes I was wrong, go figure. :blush

What is behind someone wanting to get the last word?

Sometimes it's pride, but I also believe it can be a heartfelt desire to provide correct information. I have a friend who is often emphatic about getting the last word in certain conversations, because it is for the person's safety to admit that he is correct and follow his advice.

Is it possibly because they think they are the only ones that are right?I guess that involves pride.Maybe some controlling issues can be stirred into the pot.The well known statement "A know it all". I have known a few of those.

I think there is a difference between knowing you are right and believing you are right. For example, my friend I mentioned earlier is a bona fide rocket scientist. When it comes to issues of rocket design, he knows what he is talking about. One person I know tried to argue with him about how a model rocket would fly, based on certain parameters. My friend became increasingly adamant about his knowledge, because the person would hurt themselves if they did not heed his warnings. Lo and behold, that person suffered burn injuries because their rocket exploded.

Believing you are right does not involve factual certainty, but pride. I am not confident in my knowledge of many things, leading to the impulse to "prove myself" by having the last word. The question a person should ask themselves, I think, is whether their compulsion to have the last word is because of logic or because of emotion. Of course, it takes an honest and humble individual to examine themselves fairly, so those who swell with pride to begin with will often ignore the fact they are emotional, opting instead to justify their response because "it's logical."

I think it is important to be honest and to ask God to search our heart. We all have things that we know are not obedient to God.So if we can ask God to search our heart and to cleanse us and show us where we need to improve that is a good thing.
