"Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain." John 12:24
Consider a grain of wheat. If that small seed remains cool and dry, it will stay safe and dormant. But in that "safe and secure" environment it will remain unproductive. However, if that same seed is buried in damp soil, it begins to decay and die. In a miracle of new life, the kernel breaks open, roots grow downward into the earth, and a sprout posed upward. A new plant soon emerges through the surface and then grows rapidly. The new plant now produces many more kernels of wheat.
The kernel of wheat became a new plant because it died. We must also die in order to live. We must die to ourselves in order to produce fruit for the Kingdom of God. By dying to sin, self, and the world, we are freed from sin's bondage and also its wages, which is death. By our risen life in Christ, and by being deeply rooted in the nourishment of God's Word, we can flourish in our spiritual life. The we can go on to produce a great harvest for God.
