That is far out. What do you think about this. Not too long from now we will be able to have totally artificial creatures. We will also be able to change ourselves to be smarter, stronger, more resistant to disease.

This is too true, especially when it comes to cloned animals. They have shorter lifespans, are more prone to genetic diseases, are weaker, etc. Testing is ALWAYS a good thing to do before one jumps to the bigger things like producing an artificial species. Start small, end big.

He's taking a bacteria that already exists and tinkering with it for a modified functionality.
He's not starting from scratch as in "creating life". Perhaps a more accurate description would be "synthetic species".
