Bible Study BABYLON

....If, Babylon in Revelation is "ancient pagan" Rome, then how can it represent an end times world religion and economy? Wouldn't it have to be a future city~ (if not also a currently existing city)?....
As with all scripture, it has its eschatalogical elements. But much of Revelation refers to events of the time, which is why - for example - many scholars (and me) believe that the 666 beast was Nero. Nero's name happens to add up to 666 in the Hebrew system of letters and numbers. In Hebrew, "Caesar Nero" = "NRWN QSR" = N 50 + R 200 + W 6 + N 50 + Q 100 + S 60 + R 200 = 666. (A variant spelling of the name, NRW QSR, adds up to 616, which some manuscripts have in place of 666).

I think it is funny that American Christians want so badly to be in Biblical Prophecy that they choose to be Babylon just so they can get in the Mix.

One scary note is that the City of Babylon has been partially rebuilt. So it actually exists. Is it the Babylon of Rev? I don't know. What you find with Revelations is that there are things that refer to what the Church was going through at the time, and things that will occur in the future. The same can be said of all the Old Testament Prophets as well. So yes it does refer to Rome, but also a future leadership.

As far as Babylon making peace with Israel, and then suggesting that US has peace with Israel well one thing we have never been at war with Israel. The Babylon you are talking about was an enemy first then made peace then broke the peace. If it is jsut a country that is at peace with Israel then it could mean that Canada is Babylon!!! I knew it! Or England, In fact just recently Pakistan has made a treaty with Israel, could they be Babylon? But if helps you sleep at night the US can be Babylon.

The argument rages on as to whether Revelation was written in early 60s AD or in the 90s AD. What ones believes about the written date will determine what they believe about much of Revelation.

Here's one key; Laodicea was destroyed by an earthquake in, I believe, 61 AD and there may have been another earthquake a couple of years later, which added to it's destruction. When it was rebuild is questionable. Some say it wasn't until after 120 AD. If that is so, them Revelation could not have been written in the 90s AD. There would not have no Laodicean church.

About 666, some very old manuscripts have cropped up and 666 is 616. But before anyone bites, read this: http://www.escapeallthesethings.com/666 ... -beast.htm

You can do a Google search for... 666 or 616, which is it.

The United States?

Turn~ Maxwell Smart is "too cool" thanks for the clip. Does his expression cycle or reverse? I can't tell. BTW~ Some years ago I studied the historical city of Babylon, its roots and pagan worship. So I think I know where your thread is leading, this thread has provided me with a quickening in watching the news and applying that previous knowledge. And my gratitude flies up to Jesus! :-D

~ So if I concur that Revelation was written in 60AD, how will that effect my escatological belief?

As you may guess I don't think I have the time to put in years of reading and study to find this view by myself. I believe the times we live in are speedily winding us into a final minute. Though I expect to continue to read and study, you are well aware of the layers upon layers of Newton Theology to wade hip-deep thru to come to any sound conclusions. :-?

If indeed this view is inspired by the word my brothers exegesis and instruction ought to apply to this family members faith as well. Ya think, maybe? :smt040
Now I understand that in some things only the Teacher (as in the Holy Spirit) is given to tell into our hearts. Yet, in many others God wins great glory thru our shared testifying to the truth. Jesus said He came for that purpose~ and we follow within His steps when we do likewise.

BTW~ The number 616 totals 13, Satan's number,(no that's not superstitiuos) and the number 666 totals 7 the number of completion. Biblically speaking it has nothing to do with numerology~ that is how the bible uses those two numbers repeatedly. But it seems totaling the digits is not biblical ~ sooooooo ~ :smt102

Your turn ~ bonnie
