She got him as a puppy, and Bagel, my female basset/beagle mix, adopted him and spoiled him. Dogs visiting the house were never allowed to sleep on her bed in the computer room. Bear would go and lie down in the middle of it. Bagel would walk in, sigh, and lay down on the rug. So he has a sense of entitlement.

you sound like my wife's family. monica had 3 cats and 3 dogs when I first met her. my wife has had pets most of her life.

I don't really trust people who don't like animals. I know that's not fair, and not always true, but my experience is that people who love animals are trustworthy and good to their fellow humans as well.

Yeah people who hate animals in general are not to be trusted. They tend to be resentful in other areas of life as well or generally have a poor attitude towards and a low understanding of beings/ people that are different from their own mould.
Also, the sensation of "cuteness" is something that humans like probably all mammals are wired to experience when looking at certain traits; it's biologically linked to our instinct to protect and nourish others, especially weaker ones like our own children or pets. If a human is numb to the biological/ psychological effect of cuteness they are likely to be numb to the needs of others in general and thus more likely to be careless, indifferent or flat out sadistic. Psychopaths (i.e. people who have a Dissocial Personality Disorder) are often found to be cruel not only to fellow humans, but also to animals; or they commited acts of animal cruelty when they were kids. If memory serves me right it's even a questionnaire item in a personality disorder questionnaire (I've filled in a number of them *sigh*).
However it doesn't work the other way around. Some people like animals but are unkind and resentful to other humas. Most prominent example is Adolf Hitler who genuinely loved his dogs and adopted a vegetarian diet because animal cruelty distraught him.

Yes. It was amusing and touching to see how Bagel, a spoiled brat herself, was immediately taken by this cute little puppy and became protective and tolerant of his behavior. You could see it in her face as she got familiar with him. She was spayed and never had puppies, but she definitely took a motherly liking to Bear.
