Back in the days of ancient Greece, God was unknown in the world. Those that lived and died before Jesus and the cross, where did theur spirits go? To hell? To some kind of purgatory? I'm assuming they couldn't go to heaven.

Very simple answer that people seem to have missed ?

1. Before Christ all the world was enemies to God/sinners.

2. By those offences, judgement came upon all men to condemnation.

3. In Adam, all die, in Christ shall all be made alive. ( Christ took our sins/offences/unbelief.)

Romans 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.
12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Romans 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

1 Corinthians 15:21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

Regarding condemnation now.

That judgement that came upon all men to condemnation, clearly was not the end of the matter, as life continued, and God does nothing for vanity, as that is offending man who does all for vanity, and dies in it.

God always had love for man He had created, so gave His only begotten Son to take away that judgement that came upon all men through unbelieving Adam.

God sent His Son to save the world, and we like the Son, who was made of a woman, made under the law, are redeemed by God to receive adoption of sons, when the fulness of the time was come, the time appointed of the Father.

Condemnation was and continues to be upon all who disbelieve in God, and offend God, instead of believing the only Son of God leads us away from offences, ( By belief in His cross that took our offences nailed to it. Colossians 2:14) and leads us to knowing the righteousness of Jesus Christ, His Holy Spirit in us, the Kingdom of Heaven within us.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Luke 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

Galatians 4:1 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;
2 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.
3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:
4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

1 John 2:29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

Same thing happened to the dead back then as now.
Same place until Rev 20.
Luke 16. Rich Man and Lazarus.

The spirit and the soul, does it have any value ?

First we have to understand the good pleasure of Gods will. ( HIs Spirit, HIs soul.)

God adopts us as children, by HIs Holy child Jesus, to make us acceptable. Our redemption comes through the blood of HIs Son, which is forgiveness for our sins.

This is also God abounding towards us in all wisdom and prudence, as through that blood, ( the Spirit of life, is in the blood.) He makes known to us the mystery of HIs will, that in the fulness of times He gathers together in one, all things in Jesus Christ. This is also to the praise of HIs glory, as we first trusted in Christ.

When we were children, we were under bondage to the elements of the world.

But the fulness of the time came, God sent forth HIs Son, to redeem us, to receive adoption of sons, and because we are sons, God sends forth the Spirit of HIs Son, into our hearts, with which we cry Abba Father. ( to God)

That is the value of man, before he is renewed/transformed, and that is the purpose of God to not leave man under the elements of the world.

Ephesians 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
8 Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;
9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

Ephesians 4:3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:
4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

Back in the days of ancient Greece, God was unknown in the world. Those that lived and died before Jesus and the cross, where did theur spirits go? To hell? To some kind of purgatory? I'm assuming they couldn't go to heaven.
It's obvious you believe the scriptures teach that human beings have souls, but I disagree. I've found nowhere in the scriptures that say human beings have souls. What I've found is the scriptures teach that human beings are souls not that they have souls. Just as the scriptures teach that human beings are living souls, they also teach that animals are living souls.(Genesis 7:21,22) The scriptures also teach that the same spirit that's in human beings is also in animals.
So I don't see anywhere in the scriptures that teach that when a human being dies he/she has a soul or spirit that is an invisible intelligent being in the human beings body that separates at death.
Genesis 2:7 says, "And YHWH God went on to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living soul, or living person."
So Genesis 2:7 is teaching us that after God had formed a flesh and blood human body from the dust of ground, he blew the breath of life(the breath of the spirit of life) into that flesh and blood human body and that flesh and blood human body became a living soul or living person. So the first man Adam didn't exist until God formed the flesh and blood human body from the dust of the ground and then blew the breath of life(the breath of the spirit of life) into that flesh and blood human body.
So after Adam had eaten from the forbidden tree God told him at Genesis 3:17-19, "And to Adam he said: “Because you listened to your wife’s voice and ate from the tree concerning which I gave you this command, ‘You must not eat from it,’ cursed is the ground on your account. In pain you will eat its produce all the days of your life. It will grow thorns and thistles for you, and you must eat the vegetation of the field. In the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you will return.”
So when Adam eventually died when he was 930 years old, he ceased to exist as a living soul or living person. So when the scriptures speak of those human beings who have died being in Sheol, Hades, or Hell, I understand that these words simply represent where the dead are, whether they are righteous or unrighteous and they are sleeping in death awaiting a resurrection back to life as a living soul or living person. When I say the words simply represent the place where the dead are, I'm not saying I believe Sheol, Hades, or Hell, literally exist because a human being doesn't have a living soul or living person in his/her human body, to be able to literally go anywhere, because the scriptures teach that the flesh and blood human body became a living soul or living person when God blew the breath of life( the breath of the spirit of life) into the flesh and blood human body. So when a human being dies he/she no longer exists as a living soul or living person. A human being is sleeping in death awaiting a resurrection so he/she doesn't literally go anywhere. The dead, meaning those who God has judged worthy of a resurrection back to life as a living soul or living person are in God's memory and at his scheduled time of the resurrection of the righteous and unrighteous he will resurrect them back to life as living souls or living persons.

We have the Gospel revealed to the world to give us the way to have faith, ( answers) and before the things that never were told in the world by Jesus were given, there are no answers. ( no way to have faith)

Adam and Eve, are examples of in the flesh. They are examples of being alive ( living souls) and not examples of the Spirit. ( God dwelling in us.)

The more important part is what a man becomes when they are Christ's.

That Spirit of Christ is what quickens our mortal bodies. ( no body is risen without that Spirit of Christ, but all live unto God already. Luke 20:38.)

As in Adam, he lived after the flesh, he died, because without making the deeds of the body dead, we cannot live.

Christ is the firstfruits of the dead, by Christ came the resurrection of the dead.

Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

1 Corinthians 15:20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

The dead remain dead and never know anything ever again.

God only remembers those who are written in the Lambs book of life, the other are blotted out of memory under heaven.

Their names were not written in the Lambs book of life from the foundation of the world, all who worship the beast. ( who worship this world.)

Deuteronomy 29:20 The Lord will not spare him, but then the anger of the Lord and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the Lord shall blot out his name from under heaven.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

Ecclesiastes 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.

Revelation 17:8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

Revelation 21:27
And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

What, was Paul saying about "setting the mind on the flesh"? The Greek word that Paul used means “to set one’s mind or heart upon something, to employ one’s faculty for thoughtful planning, with the emphasis upon the underlying disposition or attitude.” Those who live according to the flesh allow their life course to be determined basically by their sinful human nature. One scholar says about that word at Romans 8:5: “They set their minds on—are most deeply interested in, constantly talk about, engage and glory in—the things pertaining to the flesh.”

As Christians it's important we analyze what our focus in life really is. Could it be that our lives are dominated by or centered on “things of the flesh”? And it is fitting for us to consider the same about our lives. What is of greatest interest to us, and to what does our speech gravitate? What do we really pursue day in and day out? Some may find that they are focusing on trying different types of wine, decorating the home, finding new clothing styles, making investments, planning vacation trips, and the like. Such matters are not bad in themselves; they can be normal aspects of life. For example, Jesus once made wine, and Paul told Timothy to take “a little wine.” But Jesus and Paul didn't constantly talk about, engage and glory in” wine. It wasn't their passion, what they ‘constantly talked’ about. So, What about us? What is our key interest in life?

So Self-examination is important. Paul wrote: “Setting the mind on the flesh means death." (Romans 8:6) So this is serious, spiritual death now and physical death in the future. Still, Paul did not mean that if someone began to ‘set the mind on the flesh’ his end unavoidably would be death. Change is possible. Think of the immoral man in Corinth who went after “the flesh” and had to be disfellowshipped. Yet, he could and did change. He ceased to walk after the flesh and returned to a straight path.(2 Corinthians 2:6-8)

If it was possible for that person to change, it is possible for a Christian today to change, especially one who has not gone after the flesh as far as the man in Corinth had. Certainly, Paul’s warning about the possible final outcome for someone who ‘sets his or her mind on the flesh’ should be a stimulus to Christians to make any needed changes.

After the apostle warned us against “setting the mind on the flesh,” he offered this positive assurance: “Setting the mind on the spirit means life and peace.” What a result or reward that is, life and peace! How can we gain that reward?

“Setting the mind on the spirit” does not imply that a person has to live with his head in the clouds, so to speak. He does not need to think and talk of nothing other than the Bible or his love for God and his hope for the future. Let us recall that Paul and others in the first century who pleased God were living rather normal lives in many respects. They consumed food and drink. Many married and enjoyed family life, working to support themselves.(Mark 6:3; 1 Thessalonians 2:9)

However, those servants of God did not allow such normal aspects of life to become the center of their lives. After showing that Paul worked as a tentmaker, the record reveals what his life was centered on: He regularly gave attention to the Christian preaching and teaching work. (Acts 18:2-4; 20:20, 21, 34, 35.) And those were the activities that he recommended to his spiritual brothers and sisters. Yes, Paul’s life centered on spiritual provisions and activities. So we as Christians need to imitate him.(Romans 15:15, 16)

What is the outcome if we maintain a spiritual focus? Romans 8:6 answers clearly: “Setting the mind on the spirit means life and peace.” That implies letting our mind be influenced by and dominated by holy spirit and being in harmony with God and his thoughts. We can trust that by making “the spirit” the real center of our existence, we will have a satisfying, meaningful life now. And the lasting result is everlasting life, later.

So we need to reflect on the assurance that “setting the mind on the spirit means . . . peace.” Many people struggle to find peace of mind. While they desperately search for inner peace, christians should already enjoy it. One aspect of having such peace is that we strive to be at peace with those in our family and those in the congregation. We have the good sense to realize that both we and our brothers and sisters are imperfect. Because of this, problems may occasionally arise, and if that happens, we have been taught to follow Jesus’ advice: “Make your peace with your brother.” (Matthew 5:24) This is made easier when we recall that the other brother or sister is also serving “the God who gives peace.”(Romans 15:33; 16:20)

And there is another peace that is of incalculable value. By our “setting the mind on the spirit,” we enjoy peace with YHWH God. Isaiah recorded words that applied in his day but have an even greater fulfillment now: “You YHWH will safeguard those who fully lean on you; you will give them continuous peace, because it is in you that they trust.”(Isaiah 26:3; Romans 5:1)

The same place they go now, to the grave awaiting a resurrection. Born again Christians however are resurrected instantly now however, unless the first resurrection has not yet occurred Rev 20:6

The same place they go now, to the grave awaiting a resurrection. Born again Christians however are resurrected instantly now however, unless the first resurrection has not yet occurred Rev 20:6
I understand that born again Christians are the ones that will be kings, priests and judges with Jesus in that heavenly Messianic kingdom. They are the one's who will rule over planet earth with Jesus from heaven. These are the little flock Jesus spoke about and number 144,000. The rest of those who are resurrected will be resurrected on the new earth(not a new planet earth).
It was always God's intention when he created man and put him in the garden called Eden for humans not to die. So when God told Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply and subdue the earth, he wanted planet earth filled with sinless humans, who wouldn't grow old and die or get sick and die, or to go hungry or be without a home or work. God wanted earth to be a paradise, with humans living on t forever. This will happen one day because the scriptures teach us at Isaiah 55:11 that whatever God's purpose is or whatever God's will is, it will be fulfilled it will not be stopped.
So while I agree that when a born again Christian dies he/she is instantly resurrected, when all the 144,000 have died and been resurrected then will start the resurrection of the righteous and u righteous who will live on earth forever.

The soul was made living, but was not a quickened spirit.

Then Jesus Christ shows He is more than the living man, ( who dies) He is life, and the light of men.

To hear the devil, ( the devil spirit in man) is the same death that began with Adam, dying for no love perfected in them of the love given by Jesus Christ in His Holy Spirit. We believe in and trust the Spirit of Christ. ( why would anyone hear the devil spirit, the perfect liar, a false light shining.)

John 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

1 John 2:8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

1 John 4:12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

2 Corinthians 11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

Yes, the physical body goes to the grave, waiting to be resurrected.

The spirit of saints go to heaven.

So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:6-8

At death our spirit (inner man) separates from our physical body.

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. James 2:26

Our spirit (inner man) does not stay with our body when we die.

We either go to heaven to be with the Lord, to await His return and return with Him to receive our glorified body at the resurrection or we go to hell.

But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-15

The saints in heaven will return with Him.

  • even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.

Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.
Revelation 19:11-14

  • And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.

Well said.

Jesus came to earth, the antichrist denies that Christ has come in the flesh, Christ was received up to Heaven.

We either sit with Christ in heavenly places now, or it wont be ever.

Luke 17:20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Ephesians 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
