I will go with Serenity. There are other great Sci-Fi movies, but this one is my current favorite. It is like Star Wars from the point of view of Han Solo. Great story and characters.

Blade Runner,

Forbidden Planet,

To me, the 3 greatest sci-fi movies are from the 1950's and you have named 2 of them. The 3rd is "The Thing (From Another World)". The special fx of these movies, being from the 50's, of course, are laughable, but the plots are awesome. I would love to see remakes of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and "Forbidden Planet" with current fx and remaining true to the original storyline. ("The Thing" was remade and was very good but a bit too loosely based on the original script I think)

About 15 years ago the author Ray Bradbury was offered a chance to write a remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still". He turned the offer down. Instead, he wanted to write a sequeal that had the aliens returning because we had failed to listen to their warning.
It would have delt with earth having to defend itself in a trial setting while being judged by the combined alien goverments. Earth needed to prove that it was not a possible threat to the different worlds in our part of the galaxy.
I hope that some day Bradbury gets the rights and can release this script as a novel.
The studio decided not to go through with the project because it did not provide enough material to make an action adventure film.

How about a remake of the original, with Gort waking up and wreaking havoc on the army for 30 minutes before the girl gets to say - "klattu, verada, nikto" (for the sake of more action)...THEN a sequel along the lines of with Bradbury's idea?

I'm a huge fan of the Back to the Future Trilogy. I also love the movie Pitch Black. I've got to agree though about Gattaca, another awesome movie.

Another great sci-fi that, IMO, does not get the credit it deserves is Silent Running. Also, check out the directers cut of The Abyss.

Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris, simply because it is so unlike any other science fiction story ever told.

It was a trip of mind, memory, regret, etc., not aliens.

Donnie Darko.

Its not epic, but its a really great movie.

Epic wise, I would go with Star Wars.

Star-Trek First Contact is really good as well. One of the best Trek films.

Donnie Darko is definitely a great movie. I purchased the Directors Cut on DVD which was fine, but regardless of the title, i always seem to prefer the theatrical versions over the extended ones.
