My brother, Eric, had a massive stroke about 2 weeks ago. He got through the swelling phase and was responding with grunts and hand gestures. But now he's unresponsive and the doctor has said he will die. They recommended he go to hospice. Our family is making the hard decision about doing that, weighing a possible recovery in the hospital while not on morphine with resting comfortably on morphine in hospice. As of right this moment, my brother who lives by him in Florida has asked the doctor for one last hand squeeze response. From there we need wisdom and guidance.

My brother is like my twin. He's less than a year younger than I. He's had serious medical problems these last few years and if God has ordained that he not survive this my prayer is for safe passage into eternity, both physically and spiritually.

My wife and I will start praying now, always praying for a recovery.

Sorry to hear that.
I will be praying for all concern.

Prayers going forth for Eric, and all your family in this situation. God has him in comfort and safety.
Blessings in Christ Jesus.

Praying for your brother, Jethro, and for you.

Praying for your brother and your family.

So sorry to hear about this. I will definitely include your family in my prayers.

I'm really sorry to learn about your brother, Jethro Bodine .

Your brother, you & family are in my prayers. Making a decision about hospice care in a situation like this just isn't easy, regardless.

My wife went through this with Hospice, they are excellent at what they do, you won't do wrong by bringing him home and letting Hospice do what they do best, minister to his and your needs...

So what's going on Jethro?
I want to make sure I tell you all that your prayers have been deeply appreciated. I just got off the phone with my brother who is in the room with my brother. The hospice doctor examined Eric and said the same thing the hospital did--he is going to die. There is too much brain damage. He is unresponsive. He didn't take the feeding tube so he can't be fed anyway.

The doctor supplied some more information for us. You see Eric has had unexplained heart problems for a few years now. He's had two heart attacks and eventually ended up on disability and couldn't even drive. Turns out what happened this time is a piece of his heart dislodged and caused the stroke, not a blood clot. And since he did not get help for two or three hours there was a lot of brain damage. Add to that, he had a heart attack during his surgery to remove part of his skull to allow the brain to swell safely.

So, he's at the end. The doctor told my brother to make all the calls he needed to make and prepare the family for the inevitable. So it could be tonight, it could be tomorrow, it could be four days, but the doctor said he is shutting down. So what you can pray and continue to pray is that God grants him safe and comfortable physical and spiritual passage into eternity.

I can't tell you what his spiritual condition is with certainty, but I am praying that as long as he's in the body God can graciously and mercifully communicate with him somehow and prepare him to leave the body if he's not prepared to do that. I just don't know what goes on inside the mind of a person in his kind of condition. I just know that if there is any thing God can do he will do it. And of course, I always leave room for an absolute miracle of healing for his brain and heart, but we all agree half way is not going to be a suitable answer. We don't want to see him survive this just to be a vegetable. Any hope for restoration has to be for a return of his mobility and independence so he can go back to his house.

Thanks again for your heartfelt prayers.
Safe and comfortable passage for my little brother Eric, in the name of Jesus.
By God's grace see you on the other side.
