[_ Old Earth _] Can science determine..

And it is precisely the anthropocentric egoism displayed above that increases my disdain for creationism. Believing the earth and all the creatures living here are man's for the exploitation is remarkably shortsighted and silly.

How so. Even TOE advocates the survival of the fittest. If I catch a fish and I'm hungry, sorry, but your butt is food.

It does not advocate anything as morally justifiable or unjustifiable, but rather explains natural processes. "Survival of the fittest" refers to natural selection and the processes or natural forces that cause living things change or even stay the same over time. Fortunately humanity on the whole has more ability to learn and consider the consequences of our actions farther than "your butt is food".

I agree, and, as a creationist, I consider myself a steward of my environment. This includes minimizing the suffering of any of God's creatures. It also includes not killing creatures just for the heck of it. I know many of us that grew up hunting had fathers who insisted if you kill something you eat it (creationists and noncreationists). Eating one crow or opossum will usually do the trick. ;) As a steward of my environment (a pretty standard creationist value) I also believe that we are responsible for managing our natural resources, including: keeping the air we breath clean; not littering; protecting endangered species; taking all practical measures to ensure we don't sludge up our beautiful coastal environments by carelessly harvesting petroleum products, etc...I don't think being good stewards of our environment is a creationist/ noncreationist issue. Look at: Mexico (largely Catholic); China (largely Atheistic), etc...The U.S. wasn't much better until the last 50 years or so.

As to the "Survival of the fittest" bit, I certainly don't mind being on top of the food chain. ;)

I now catch your drift. If there is anyway to reduce suffering among any of God's creatures, I'm all for it. For example, while hunting, if I don't kill an animal right away, I immediately put a bullet through its brain. Then I eat it. When fishing I keep the fish alive in a live well until it's time to dress them, then I club their brains, and then dress them. Then I fry them up. I definitely agree to reduce the suffering of any of God's creatures.

Opossums are quite edible:

Can't speak for crow, though.

No doubt, and I can't speak from experience, but if iI were looking at a menu that had options such as beef, pork, fish, etc...Well, you get my drift. However, they may be great. I know that a lot of people eat them. I guess I'd try one once just to see. I was told for years that gar were nasty tasting, but a game warden conducting gill surveys once asked if I wanted a couple. I asked him why. He told me they were great. Well, reluctantly, I tried one. Very delicious. Reminds me of crab or lobster. Boneless too!
