Casual Conversation

Haha. I just couldn't believe it. Just because I wanted to wear pants I couldn't go to a church. I as so shocked.

I used to have a friend that went to a church where everyone dressed up! Women and girls were not allowed to wear pants, all of bible study and preaching were of the Old Testament! I asked if I would be able to attend because o don't own a dress or skirt and I was told that I would not be welcome! I was shocked!

I later then asked why it was like this, my old friend told me that it's because I'm the bible it says that women cannot wear the same clothing that men do!

I was just curious as to what you all thought about that?

A million years ago i had that same discussion with Dad.. so i got out the scriptures, respectfully showed him when the scriptures were written men wore tunics... something like a big ankle length T shirt... ... We had no more discussions about Levi's..:).. IN those days i HAD to wear dress or skirt to school :sad

I grew up in a church like that. Though I went to church in pants while there a couple times and they didn't fuss. (We had been gone and I wasn't able to get in my church clothes before heading to church.)
Men and women's garb is a cultural thing, not set in stone, and has changed a lot over time and from culture to culture. We have men's and women's pants today, so I don't think pants are an issue at all really.

If someone wants to worship the Lord and be among others then the small things shouldn't really matter. I do think that a lot of churches will embrace people that want to hear the word. Just some churches spout hatred and how others are evil because they don't believe the exact way that church believes.

That's funny, men back then didn't wear pants either!
Bingo,

Wonder if they made the men wear robes/dresses (robes are basically dresses) too...wait? it was probably run by men so.....

My thoughts would have been to tell them they are not the same clothes, yours are women's pants and not cut for men.

That really is a bizarre Church...never heard of anything like it. But I do get why people go over the edge as they do, we are after all dealing with eternity here and people can get weird if they fear they don't have it right.

Welcome SaraBeth, it's good to have you here. If you look, you'll see that the condemnation of the Law and the hope and promise of the Gospel are present in both the Old and New Testaments

Gospel in the Old Testament: I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah" - Psalm 32:5

Law in the New Testament: "If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless." - James 1:26

Anyway, deep theological conversation aside. I love my Church I remember showing up to Church once covered in oil, dirt, not having shaved for a week, forgetting to shower or brush my teeth that morning, and driving 20 minutes in a truck without A/C on a 90 degree day, I felt sorry for the lady in the pew next to me but at the end of the service among all the things she could've mentioned about my appearance she just said "I'm glad you could make it to Church today" and then she complimented me on my singing. Among all the things she could've said to me about how I appeared she decided to look past that and give a man obviously having a bad day a compliment. Did I mention I love my Church?

Thanks, it's good to be here and talk amongst believers.. I'm glad you have found a church that you believe in and feel comfortable! :) I'll find one someday!

I was just curious as to what everyone else thought about the splitting of the bible and to see if anyone had heard of a church like that. I've said it a couple times but I was shocked.

I love the whole bible. The stories before Christ were those to be remembered and have a lot of good meaning. Reading all the stories and how people lived back then is amazing. Then reading the birth of Jesus, his life, his death, his resurrection and his gift to us is wonderful. I love the bible! :)

Lots of debate and differences in views in how to handle different viewpoints and promote Christian behavior, but I do think some churches are definitely shooting themselves in the foot by being too hardfaced.

Also, welcome! Shoulda said that earlier.

I agree with you. Shooting themselves in the foot would be about right.

Ive heard from others what was being said in their church and they would quote scripture and I would question it myself. Later look in my bible and it would say something different. Confusing as to why it would be preached differently then what's in the bible. I can see where people would be skeptical of churches and being led down the wrong path.

Thank you! I'm happy to be here. I like have this type of conversation. It's hard to find people around that believe the same ways!
I am really not Santa but I love teaching and jaw boning, conversation to those north of the Mason Dixon Line. A secret though, we don't all need to believe all things alike. I'm a Southern Baptist but I have fellow believers that run the entire spectrum of beliefs. As long as we believe the Fundamentals we can all get along.

Oh yeah, Howdy!

Isaiah 61:3
To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.Holman Christian Standard Bible

Shadows vs realities. I sure wish I were qualified to help you.

Note all the symbolism in this verse. Today we might see the comparison of concrete clothing to abstract praise without too much problem. When just the garments are mentioned (without the abstract comments) we scratch our head and wonder. When we have both the reality of Jesus and symbolism shadows, then we begin to embrace a larger group (the wall is broken down in Christ).

Job 29:14
I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.

We put on Christ.

Romans 13:14
But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the luststhereof.

I will slow down with this. The reality / body that casts the shadow is Jesus.

Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them (Romans 14:1-3)

My husband is a missionary, and he used to drink some wine in moderation, but when he visits other churches, they often ask him, whether he drinks any alcohol, so he stopped for them not to stumble.

Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak. For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols? So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall (1-Cor. 8:9-13)

I'm one of ones who think that the single page should be torn from the bible, the one that separates the OT from the NT. I see it as one book. There's so many types and shadows in the OT that we should be reading it. Jesus is on almost every page if one is able to discern, lol.

Like one of my fav Pastors says...the OT is the NT concealed, and the NT is the OT revealed...

The Word of God is the Word of God is the Word of God. God never has changed, not one time. People are told that Jesus came to save us from our sins, and so separate the Old and the New. That is not the main reason Jesus came though, He came to destroy the root of it and stop the destroyer from destroying our lives.

Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
(Heb 2:14-15)

He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
(1Jn 3:8)

I don't even refer them as the Old and New Testaments. To me they're the Hebrew scriptures and the Greek scriptures. When I preach it's almost always from the Hebrew scripture, partly because I don't want them forgotten about, as most of our sermons are preached from the Greek. Also, I just like the lessons.

I've always referred to it as the Bible! I love all parts! Nothing should be excluded from studying or preaching!

What's everyone's favorite book in the bible and why? :)
