Chanting

The Orthodox have been chanting over 1000 years. Makes "contemporary" seem a lot more contempory doesn't it?

I use to chant in the very early 70's (Nam Myōhō Renge Kyō) I was a hippie then and I didn't know what I wanted nor did I know the truth about anything.I also have tarried, that is where you repeat the name Jesus over and over with a bunch of people until it sounds like you are chanting, which you really are.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namu_Myōhō_Renge_Kyō
Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō (南無妙法蓮華経), (also Nam Myōhō Renge Kyō)[1] (English: Devotion to the Mystic Law of the Lotus Sutra or Glory to the Sutra of the Lotus of the Supreme Law)[2][3] is a mantra that is chanted as the central practice of all forms of Nichiren BuddhismMyōhō Renge Kyō being the Japanese title of the Lotus Sūtra. The mantra is referred to as daimoku (題目[4]?) or, in honorific form, o-daimoku (お題目) and was first revealed by the Japanese Buddhist teacher Nichiren on the 28th day of the fourth lunar month of 1253 CE at Seichō-ji (also called Kiyosumi-dera) near Kominato in current-day part of the city of Kamogawa, Japan.[5][6] The practice of chanting the daimoku is called shōdai (唱題). The purpose of chanting daimoku is to attain perfect and complete awakening.

Pro_21:2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.

I'm hesitant to jump on a condemning bandwagon that globally puts down an action or belief in certain techniques.

Pagans pray, so praying is automatically bad?

Satan was said to quote scripture, so we shouldn't?

Some new church is said to "chant", so that make chanting bad?

And, on and on, covering just about anything done in worship that you can think of. Sorry, I'm just not geared that way anymore. (Used to be, but not since I met Jesus in a hospital room.)

Tarrying For The Holy Spirit Is It Scriptural?

http://williambranhamhomepage.org/thustarr.htm
I pretty much agree with this article. It was men who made up rules about what and how the Holy Spirit would work in individuals. I believe this has done damage to having simple faith to just believe and receive. I also believe that this pressure has caused some who do believe to fake gifts because of a need to fit in.
With all my heart I believe there are people who have amazingly strong faith to trust the Lord and the Lord would use them to heal the sick, etc. But they are sitting in churches that teach that the gifts are not for today so they don't have faith that the Lord would use them to do His works in these areas and they don't ask Him to use them either. So the faith that they have is not benefiting the church as much as it could be. They may even stifle what the Holy Spirit has for them to do because of fear that only satan manifests false gifts, they are taught this in some churches.
Or they are in churches that teach that unless you speak in tongues you haven't been "baptisted in the Holy Spirit" and therefore they are not open to operating the other gifts because they are told they can't.
To me it's so much man determining what God will do. Get out of the way and let people believe and receive.
Jesus said it was the Jewish leaders who were standing in the way of the people receiving what God had for them. Believing and receiving the Messiah.
Mat 23:13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

You really need to know what someone is saying. That can be dangerous.

Why is the emergent church something to be aware of?

Thanks.

Some of what are called 'emergent churches' are headed by people who knowingly (or unknowingly) mislead the congregation. So, with a regard to discernment, we need to be aware of these churches - along with other churches that mislead.
