Hey everyone, i'm hoping to expand my list soon so....hey which artists have really had an impact in your faith walk. These would have to be my top albums right now. You can add as many as you want. These are the artists that really helped you through. Who was the first Christian artist that you came across, Jason Upton was #1 for me along with...

jason upton - all albums and all dvd's
kim walker - here is my song album/jesus culture albums & dvd's
the glorious unseen - tonight the stars speak album
brian and jenn johnson - undone album
bethel music - here is love album & dvd
rebecca st james - i will praise you album

Also, has anyone been to any live worship concerts.
I haven't been yet, but it would be a good experience. Maybe one day.

Casting Crowns would be probably one of the top ones for me. I have two of their albums and some songs I bought separately off iTunes.
Also:
Steven Curtis Chapman (an album that I don't remember the name of right now)
Gungor (I actually have only listened to a few of their songs, but I really love the songs by them titled Beautiful Things and We Will Run and plan to check out more from them eventually)
Hillsong United (lots of good songs by them, though I don't own any albums as of yet)
Third Day (again, no albums from them, but I've listened to lots of songs)

As far as live worship concerts, the only one I've been to is Winter Jam 2012. (It's an annual concert tour, and they always have 10 bands. At the one I attended they had Sanctus Real, Skillet, and of course others.)

They seem to be very popular, Casting Crowns, don't they?

Skillet: would they count as Heavy Metal, maybe?

Blessings.

Skillet? Either heavy metal, or hard rock. I'm not sure.
Although they're one of my favorites, I wouldn't really say they do worship songs. Their songs tend to be able to be taken in two ways--Christian, or secular, whichever the listener prefers. (Take Awake and Alive as an example. You can pick out the Christian meaning in the song, but you could also ignore it if you chose.)
Their older songs, like I Can and I Trust You, were obviously Christian, but they weren't as skilled back when those were recorded.

Questdriven:

So you rather like the heavy metal /hard rock sound and environment, then? particularly if it can be blended with a Christian message? I guess you like the throaty roaring and elemental rhythms, particularly if it's fairly loud, I suppose?

Blessings.

Yeah, I'd say so. I didn't realize this until coming across Skillet, though. (Not having been into contemporary music until a couple of years back due to the way I was raised, it took me a while to discover what I really like.)

Love Casting Crowns. Have seen them twice in concert.

Gungor is one of my current favorites. They did a show at my church and it changed the way I think about live shows. Simply spectacular.

I am a sucker for great songwriting and Jimmy Needham and Andrew Peterson write amazing songs. As does Matthew West.

Shane and Shane are hands down my favorite Christian act. Their music speaks to me. I have all 9 of their albums and I can put them on random and the whole family will be happy for hours. They have a song called "The one you need" on their latest album that literally had me in tears the first time I heard it.

Took my son to Winterjam in January and every act was great. Really loved For King and Country and Building 429.

Saw Red, Thousand Foot Krutch, Manafest and Nine Lashes and they were all really good, if you like the harder rock stuff.

There's a band out of Texas, I think, called Seryn. They are spectacular musicians. Kinda Mumford and Sons ish. Really digging on them right now.

As you can probably tell, I really love music. I've always felt a connection to it.

Oh, and Jason Bare. He's come to my Bible study a few times, and I have his album Beautiful Design.

Yeah, I'd say so. I didn't realize this until coming across Skillet, though. (Not having been into contemporary music until a couple of years back due to the way I was raised, it took me a while to discover what I really like.)

I like the old hymns, too, mind; in fact I probably like them best. :)

Hymns are good. And to be honest in a lot of cases they seem more spiritual than a lot of modern worship songs...some of the modern ones seem more me-centered and than God-centered. Not all modern worship songs are like that, though.

Well, for hymns and songs sung among Christians, it's especially good to make sure of the words. Some are more Scriptural than others, I guess.

Re. band such as Skillet, I guess you think that it's kind of invigorating to hear and feel all the crescendos.

Yeah, I'd say so. I didn't realize this until coming across Skillet, though. (Not having been into contemporary music until a couple of years back due to the way I was raised, it took me a while to discover what I really like.)

So Skillet and Christian hard rock / heavy metal kind of does something for you, then?

As if to say, helped you to discover yourself just a bit, maybe?

Blessings.

For me it's Switchfoot. I think they're similar to what Questdriven said about Skillet - their lyrics can be interpreted in a Christian way, and I think this is intentional by the band. However, if you're not a Christian, or not familiar with Christian teachings, they may just be "nice" lyrics to you. I wouldn't call Switchfoot a worship band, but they're an awesome Christian band. I've been to one of their concerts, and it was pretty awesome.

Recently I've gotten into Third Day and Casting Crowns :thumbsup. Casting Crowns actually came out for a concert near to where I live, but I didn't know about it until like a few days before, and of course it was booked out :gah.

I haven't heard much of skillet, but from what I have heard, I like it :)

Might I suggest, if you like the rock-metal feel of Skillet, a band call Disciple? They've got the rockin guitar type tunes with a bit more overt Christian message. Not quite as all out as say a Casting Crowns or Newsboys but they still stick a bit truer to Christian messages. Pillar also tends to be in this category.

For when I'm not feeling quite as driven to listen to rock-metal, I tend towards Casting Crowns, Third Day, Newsboys, and even sometimes Lacrae (though he's rather quite firmly in the rap category).

I can't do live shows anymore, so I've never seen any of these folks live. The last one I did see live was a very very long time ago and it was Petra.

faeriecat:

Hi; do you like "the rock-metal feel of Skillet" yourself?

It's kind of: there! and rasping and shouting, if you like it when they do that.

Seems to be liked among some Christians.

(I know the words matter a lot.)

Blessings.

Yes, depending on my mood, I do like the metal feel of Skillet, Disciple, or Pillar. My gentleman isn't so fond of it but that's OK. The guitars speak without speaking if that makes sense. :)

Ty, faeriecat.

I was just listening to Disciple's Lay my Burdens. It's not maybe one of the really loud ones; though it is quite loud.

I know that there is in the Christian metal genre the kind of sense: 'I want to be outspoken! going to get my words out whether they are rasping, throaty or whatever'.

What the name of the Disciple guy with all the tatts, btw? if you know.

Sounds like your husband has other tastes, though.

Blessings.

No, I don't tend to remember names at all. <oops> :)

I like that one by Disciple. Also "Backstabber" ... singer's talking about how this girl did him wrong then the bridge goes into a "wait, God, is that what I put you through?" type message.

Er, we're not married. We've been dating almost a year now. Which is why I refer to him as my gentleman rather than my husband. But he does like Contemporary Gospal like Casting Crowns, Newsboys, Rebecca St James and such, which I also like, so is all good.

faeriecat:

Unless it's a lady with the tatts? seem to remember a lot of long hair there on the person, too.

I'll have to listen to Backstabber, as well. Disciple certainly does have a metal feel that you said you liked.

Blessings.
