Christians and the Social Ladder

It seems to me many Christians are devoted to climbing the social ladder. What they don’t realize is that the social ladder sits on sand, and when they get to the top of the social ladder, they find themselves staring into the boots of those that didn’t climb the social ladder.

Fellow Christians, stay off of the social ladder. It brings nothing but pain.

Some would attest that the Bible encourages achievement and social standing. If one is of pure heart and their ideas are logical, rational, and practical, they would be a boon to humanity if others looked up to them as leaders and shepards of their flock. Of course, if one is greedy, narcissistic, and just a bad person, it would be a detriment to society if they were in social standing above others, influencing their actions negatively.

The ladder sits in sand If someone is if impure heart. If their heart is pure and true, and they are truely worthy of being a leader of humanity, that ladder may still sit in sand, but others around the base are there to make sure the ladder is supported and stable so as to keep it from sinking.

It's a good thing some like David, Solomon, and Jesus stayed on the social ladder.

There is corruption found at all class levels. Humanity is corrupt and success breeds pride but it is possible to be successful and humble at the same time.

If the only solution we can think of is to avoid sinful situations the only solution would be to aviod humanity but then how could we spread the gospel?

The social ladder is a structure of pride. Pride is a sin. Jesus had nothing to do with the social ladder.

One man becomes a bishop through hard work and dedication. He is to be congratulated.

Another man becomes a bishop because he flattered al the right people. He is a social climber.

Do you understand what I am saying?

I know what you mean elijah23, and I would not worry about it. Sounds like there might be more to this concern of yours than just pride of others. Social settings can be a little sticky sometimes. We are not always treated right, or the way we think we should be. other people who are less deserving sometimes get the promotions. People who are jerks sometimes seem to be the ones who are "Living Large". But I think when we see this in the world, it should give us pause to know that God is in charge and not us.

I once had a co worker who came to my desk furious over another young womans promotion to a job she did not deserve. She was less educated, less capable and far less deserving than my friend. The job was under a sr VP who handled the company insurance claims. It paid 52K, car allowance and laptop. This was back in 98, so it was a big deal job, and my friend was the right choice, but passed over for this young lady. No one could figure it out, but I told her not to worry. It will reveal itself in time. The truth always comes out.

She was not happy with my response to her, but I told her something was up with it and to just let time take it's course. I did not know what it was about either, but 4 years later I found out. Seems our Sr VP had set up a phony company that was "hired" to audit claims. Together this VP and her new young protege had embezzled over 1.2 million dollars from the company in fraudulent claim audits. They are both waring orange these days, which is far cry from their Ann Taylor collections.

Do not focus on the proud you speak of. Let them be. Be careful that you don't slip into the sin of envy, and always remember that God is in charge. He'll handle it in his time.

Good advice. We have to be careful about falling into the grips of jealousy. It is very easy to do, especially in the work place. I hear it a lot even from other Christians and I’m probably guilty at times too. Why does so-and-so get more pay than me? How does he/she deserve that promotion? They must have pictures or something! This company is so cheap…I could work for X company and make 50% more.

Every time I hear these kinds of complaints I am reminded about the parable of the workers in the field, Matthew 20:1-16. Each day when we get up in the morning and head off to work we make the choice to accept the contract for that day. Learn to be content with the choices we make and not compare ourselves with others.

In my faith walk I can be concerned and beat myself up because I may not be as good an evangelist as others or I may not have the scriptures on the tip of my tongue or I make mistakes. But I try not to worry about it because I know that God has a plan for me and will reveal it in His time. My purpose right now is to learn, grow, and mature in my faith and let God lead me where He wishes, which might even include pushing me up that social ladder to spread His gospel around the upper floors.
