Christmas gifts...

...do you, or don't you do this? I mean, at a certain age...it seems like it gets to be a drag. That and, in my family, for a while there we called off Christmas gifts because of social class differences between family members causing problems (basically, those who couldn't afford to give as much gave to much to outgive those who could give more=tension...made family get togethers tense for a little while).

Anyway, is there an age at which you stop, or at least tone it down? If you're married...what's the rule? Ever called off gift giving for any reason?

We do the gift giving, but we don't go overboard. Some of the family favorites over the years have been homemade presents, created for a particular person. Since we're all avid readers, gift certificates to Barnes & Noble (or the like) are highly appreciated.

I do gift giving.
It is easier now that I can afford to do so.
Extra gifts on our list are given to those we know that we think may not get gifts from anyone.
No matter who you are, it's nice to get a gift on Christmas.
It's nice to know that someone cares enough to give you something.
Even if it's just a box of chocolates or something.
It's a good feeling to get something.

Wow that is a good gift! :study:study:study:study:study:study:study :woot2

The kids are grown up now so we don't really do the gift giving thing anymore. Not in a big way at least. Why should they continue to get a bunch of gifts on Christmas? It's not their birthday, lol. Besides, they get gifts all year long from dad. There's usually a few gifts under the tree, if there is a tree (sometimes), but it's not like it was when they were kids (Hallelujah!)

Christmas is really about just being together with family, and celebrating Jesus birthday. I know it's not His real birthday, Judah is impassable in December because of snow, but it's an ok day to celebrate it. :)

eh i only buy gifts for my best friend geo and my dog .But my favorite thing is the rest of the year remembering peoples birthdays i love that especially the ones that had no clue that i knew and then they get roses from me

I don't like getting into the crass commercialism so I try to avoid the "brown thursday, black friday, cyber monday" hype. Instead, I will pick up little things here and there during the year or re-gift items. At work we do a "Secret Santa" exchange where during the 3 weeks of advent people sneak small gifts into eachother's mailboxes. It's really fun to guess and keep people guessing. And at the faculty Christmas party you bring a "big gift" for your person and everyone gets 3 guesses. I look forward to it every year! At home it's different because my husband and I don't have any kids, so we're more low-key about Christmas gifts. We usually buy eachother something practical. Since my brother and I are "grown-ups" my parents just buy us 1 "big gift"...which my mom complains about because she has nothing to put under the tree! LOL The hubby and I usually go to the local Polish meat market to buy all sorts of goodies for Mom, Dad, and my Brother. Who doesn't like a basket full of food right? Plus, I don't have to worry about getting trampled to get it all!

ohhhh, that is an awesome gift! mmm. My wife was polish and her mom would send us this exact bag of Polish goodies that you are talking about every year. Sometimes, we'd go to the polish Deli in Denver to get some things for local friends who had been to our house for dinner before and liked certain things.

Mmmmmm! Polish food.

cabanosa and halva were a couple of my favs.

I embarrassed my wife one time accidentally We had invited a friend over to dinner one friday and he wanted Pierogis, because he had heard that my wife's pierogis were world class (they were)...and they do take some prep time. I guess she was busy and didn't have time to make pierogis for him, so she bought a bag of store bought frozen ones and served them...

I took one bite and said, hey where's the pierogis, what are these things? She said here they are andquietly passed the plate....I...went to the defense of her pierogis, which are awesome, and said, these are NOT your pierogis, what's going on here?!

I didn't pick up on it and she explained later, but she got embarrassed because I let the cat out of the bag on her, and then Bob knew that he got some store bought imitation pierogis...oops. But I was all set for her pierogis... you can't fool me about Polish cooking, lol.

:hysterical

My parents go nuts for the Krakus pickles. My brother loves the home-made jerky and I love the home-made pierogies (potato and cheese). My husband loves the kapusta pierogi. What he'll do is fry them up in some oil, then fry up a little onion and we mix it with sour cream and dip the pierogies in it.
OKAY now I'm getting hungry....

That's exactly how we eat pierogis. :) The potato & cheese ones at least, like you say.

I love Polish sausages.

Oh, me too! The cabanosa isn't as well known, but is very good. They're about 18" long and very small in diameter. Maybe 3/8" or a 1/2" at the most. We'd hang them in the kitchen and not even refrigerate them, no need to. A very good snack by itself.
