We are nearing the end of the Christmas season. To tell you the truth I have watched just about all the Christmas movies as I can take. They start so early now. Right after Halloween they start with the movies, the television specials, and the commercials. All of this is just to get you into the stores so we can spend our money on presents. I am getting tired of it and I am ready to move on to something else. Most of the movies aren’t bad, they make you feel good or make you want to get into the Christmas spirit, which usually entails Santa Claus, the giving of presents, or the renewing of human relationships. But there is a much deeper meaning to all of the celebrating which seems to get drowned out as we dash to the mall to spend our money.
This is the time of the season that Christians celebrate the birth of Christ, our savior. There is always debate on whether Christ was actually born on December 25th. When Jesus was born is not nearly as important as the fact that he way born. My favorite passage about Jesus birth is Isaiah 9:6-7 which says, “For unto us a child is born. Unto us a Son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Or the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order and establish it with judgment and justice, from that time forward, even forever.”
This child born was all God and all human. He came down from heaven to establish His throne as wonderful, Counselor, meaning divine, just, and perfect counselor. He is Mighty God, which indicates that the Lord is a powerful Warrior. He is Everlasting Father when means as King and Father he will protect and provide for His people forever. He is the ideal king. He is the Price of Peace. He will usher in peace that will last forever. The four double names combine aspects of Jesus’ deity with His humanity. These double names assert the dual nature of the Savior: He is God become man.
The Government and peace may be rephrased as “peaceful reign.” He has established peace in the heart of the believer in this present age. After His second coming He will establish a peaceful reign on earth. In fact the child will occupy the Throne of David forever fulfilling God’s promise to David.
So when we think of Christmas we should not just think about the presents, time together with family, shopping, and cute little movies. We should also think of the birth of the savior, the implications His birth has had on the world, and what He has done personally for us. Take time this season to meditate on your personal salvation and remember it could not have happened if that special child was not born in a manger in Bethlehem.
