christmas

:fencing:christmas:rollingpin We got ya covered, Santa!!!!:lol

My sentiments exactly!!!

My honest heartfelt opinion about Christmas being a pagan holiday is this: If I were to not celebrate Christmas because it was, years in the past, a pagan holiday, I would be engaging in superstition. Now, if I don't celebrate it because I'm a grumpy grinch like Jason, OK. Or, if I chose not to celebrate it because of the commercialism or because it's a waste of money, OK. But, I couldn't not celebrate it because of the pagan roots, because to me, that is just superstition, plain and simple and I don't believe that as a Christian I should be superstitious about things.

For me, Christmas is just like what Sissy says, a very American type of holiday with some cultural things thrown in that is a fun time for presents, family and good food. Nothing more.

:lol Hoo boy, brother, we are so not on the same page. Don't like Katy Perry, but I like the Peas and Linkin Park and of course Eminen. As well as Metallica and even some Poison. Not all of any of these artists stuff, but some of all of them...if that makes sense.

We all bring our own past and background to things. Some who were steeped into the sex, drugs and rock-n-roll scene most likely needs to stay away from certain kinds of music and things. But, when many of my peers were disco dancing and doing the s/d/r-n-r, I was deep into a cult and was living a very legalistic life of do not taste, do not touch, do not handle. However, even though I wasn't engaging in sex, taking drugs or being influenced by rock-n-roll, I was caught up in something every bit as, if not even more, sinfully destructive.

I think the Holy Spirit works in each of us to convict us where we are at our weakest. This would explain why perhaps Jason cannot listen to Linkin Park and yet eat a big breakfast before church on Sunday mornings, but I can and yet cannot. Different backgrounds, differing areas of conviction.

no, ever watch that video to that song its gonna be good night. ?it shows near nudity and hints at illicit sex. and well i am a man and fergie isnt ugly. she is a bisexual,. the dancing is arousing.

watch videos its alot different then merely listening to the songs.

if music that is near to porn(in india bollywood pornos are just that music videos) doesnt get you convicted then i dont know what to say.

if we think about sex, or any sin and it distracts us from what the lord says we ought to think about then we ought to change the habit.

i gave up secular music not as a command but in that how it promotes and pushes sin. the older songs prior to 95 arent that bad, but today, come on.

trust me. blacked eyed peas aint nothing compared to gwar, and some of the marylin manson.

but that is tween you and god.

i dont like christmas not because of the grinch think, that is my humor but because we feel that we have to give and go into debt so that they can toys that in the long they will grow out of.

if you aint got the money why go into debt? and secondly and the main thing it has never been a real christian holiday. it was added as one by the rcc on the very day of the saturn worship.

unlike el dios de los muertos or even halloween in its orginal form and also valentines day which all recalled the saints that were martyed and were later change into pagan things christmas was never anywhere close to a christian idea.

it has it as that was put into it yrs later.

I know what you mean, Jason.

It's a big money racket geared to make you feel guilty if you don't spend spend spend.

And it's the season that has the most suicides.

And that Santa Claus guy trying his best to replace God in the minds of kids.
Santa is all knowing, all present, and all powerful; so ya better watch out!
How creepy is that?

And it's just hard to look at a Christmas tree the same way after reading Jeremiah 10:3-4, and researching the whole worship of Tammaz story.

And to top it all off, you have the RCC trying to "Christianize" every pagan thing. I mean, to hear them talk you ought to be able to put a big ol' pentagram with a goat-head on it atop your tree, and PRESTO, it's a "Christian" symbol now!!!

So, yeah, there are lots of negative things to say about Christmas.

But darkness can never overcome the light.
And there are good things to say about Christmas too.
Family gets time off to travel and visit with each other. That's a GREAT thing!
We all gather around the table and give thanks to God for the fellowship and the feast we are about to stuff ourselves with!
And the HUGS ---- lots of hugs at Christmas time. I LOVE that!!!

I never watch videos of any kind. We don't have a regular TV...only a TV and DVD player to watch movies. Even when we had TV, I didn't watch videos. Not to diss Dire Straights, but I don't want "my MTV".

The passage in Jeremiah points towards how I feel about associating pagan things with Christmas, Easter etc...

In verse 5, it says of pagan gods..."Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field are they and they cannot speak. They must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them for they can do no harm nor any good."

Why shouldn't we fear pagan gods? Because they don't exist. They are only so much wood, straw or hay. To assign any kind of "godship" to wood, straw or hay is to participate in superstitious idoltry, IMO.

I know that there are a lot of websites that proclaim that the Christmas tree is a holdover from the worship of the pagan gods mentioned in Jeremiah...but in actuality the Christmas tree is a German tradition and has nothing to do with ancient middle eastern idol worship. In fact, a Christmas tree wasn't even part of English tradition until George III married a German duchess and she apparently brought the tradition to the British royal family. When their grand-daugther, Victoria married her German cousin Albert, the German tradition became very much a common English traditon as well. If you were to step back in time to anyplace other than Germany, you most likely wouldn't find any Christmas trees.

In Germany however, the fact that the tree is being cut down is symbolic of triumph over pagan gods. Because the trees were associated with the Norse gods and it was sacriligious to them to cut them down. There is a legend that St. Boniface cut down a tree associated with the god Thor, to prove Christianity's superiority over the Norse myths, much in the same way Elijah poured water over his sacrifice and called down fire from heaven to prove Jehovah's superiority over Baal. Fire was very much associated with the worship of Baal...trees were associated with the worship of Thor.

Romans apparently used evergreen boughs (but not entire trees) to decorate during Saturnila, but even they didn't start the tradition of associating greenry and life. The Egyptians brought in green palm fronds on the shortest day of the year way back when. Bottom line is, there is no Saturn or Egyptian gods or Norse gods to recieve worship. It's all superstition.

It's the evergreen as a symbol of eternal life that is at the heart of the Christmas tree. And, this symbollic association is something that can be found within the Scriptures...Hosea 14 associates God with cedars and junipers, both evergreens. Isaiah 55:13 says, "Instead of the thornbush will grow the juniper, and instead of briers the myrtle will grow. This will be for the LORD’s renown, for an everlasting sign, that will endure forever.â€

I don't have a problem with associating evergreens with God and eternal life because the Bible does that. As for a Christmas tree being connected with pagan gods, well, the gods never existed at all except in the minds of people long dead and even then, the cut Chrismas tree was symbolic of showing the non-existance of those gods, not the celebration of them.

:p :lol

Maybe we should have a thread dedicated to all the things that Christians tell others they shouldn't do even though the Bible doesn't specifically address the issue.

Christians shouldn't listen to rock music.
Christians shouldn't smoke cigarettes.
Christians shouldn't dress their kids in funny costumes and extort candy from the neighbors.
Christians shouldn't have too expensive a car.
Christians shouldn't shop at Wal-Marts.
Christians shouldn't send their kids to public schools.
Christians shouldn't drink alcohol.
Christians shouldn't say "darn" or "golly".
Christians shouldn't watch movies.
Christians shouldn't watch Oprah.
Christians shouldn't do yoga.
Christians shouldn't be Democrats.
Christians shouldn't vote.
Christians shouldn't drink caffeinated beverages.
Christians shouldn't create sculptures or paintings of people or animals.
Christians shouldn't worship on Sunday.
Christians shouldn't worship on Saturday.

And let's not forget...Christians shouldn't judge others!
Oh wait, that one is actually a commandment. :chin

;)

Thanks, Handy! (always a pleasure)

How about, "Christians should not tell others what to do?"
They "should" clean the inside of the cup FIRST.

I heard that from one who died (and rose again).

Dear Santa,

I heard a song on the radio about that disturbed me and I'd like to ask you to clarify some things for me. The lyrics said that you see us when we're sleeping. Does that mean that you're omnipresent? It also says that you know when we're awake. Does that imply omnicience? And the next line after that says that you know if we've been good or bad. Do you feel that you have the authority to make absolute moral judgements? Do you realize the immense theological implications of this?

Re: Cease and Desist

To: Mr. Santa Claus (aka Kris Kringle; aka Saint Nick)

Mr. Claus,

Our clients, Messurs Timmy Smith and Tommy Smith and Miss Tammy Smith have been made aware of numerous alleged violations trespassing, theft and privacy upon your part.

It was reported that on the night of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com
><st1:date Month=
</st1:date>December 24, 2009, you allegedly broke into and entered into the Smith residence and stole some cookies and milk that was left by the fireside. Be aware that Mister Timmy Smith, being suspicious of you due to alleged similar activities upon your part on previous occasions, did set up an electronic surveillance device. Recorded are images of a stout male of approximately 130 years of age, wearing a red coat, black boots and smoking a pipe. It has been determined that this individual fits your general description. These images can be used as evidence in a court of law as per Idaho State Code 562:c paragraph k, line 42.

<O:pIt has also been brought to the attention of the Smith's that you are allegedly spying on them, while they are sleeping. Please be advised that observing minors without their consent while they are in the privacy of their own bedrooms qualifies as stalking under Idaho State Code 304:a subset 21, paragraph b.

<O:pFurthermore, it has been reported that you are keeping a list of the minor children's activities and issued a threat based upon their being either "bad" or "good". This is in clear violation of harassment laws. Be also advised that you could be liable for a charge of slander, especially in repeating unsubstantiated allegations regarding Mister Tommy Smith and the incident with the cat.

<O:pMessurs Smith and Miss Smith have requested our legal advisement. We hereby are giving you written notice to cease observing and/or spying on these minor children, and strongly request that you remain at least 100 yards away from their residence and their schools. We also request that you in no way, either verbally or in writing, or in song, threaten the children based upon your estimation of their behavior.

<O:pIf you fail to comply with these requests, we will take action and place all evidence we have of your stalking, harassment, threats and breaking and entering to the local authorities.

<O:pSincerely,
<O:pThomas Dewey,
Attorney at Law

It's hard to get everyone together due to differing work schedules and the distance of where they live.
But most, at Christmas, get extra time off. That gives them time to plan and travel so we can all be together.

We don't do a tree, and we don't do Santa, and we don't tell our kids that December 25th is the birthday of Jesus.
But we do have a feast!!!!
And we only buy gifts for the younger children (keeps them busy while the adults visit!!), and doesn't send everyone to the poor farm.

that works. and december 25th isnt the lords birthday that is most likely the first week of october.

a christian cant be in the army and must be a wus,i mean pacifist, lol.

YES I'd rather be called a WUS than be on the same team as those MURDERING INNOCENT BABIES in their beds with 'smart' bombs!!!

How.......DARE......you.

....oh and...Christians can celebrate any day they want as long as their not directly worshipping Baal the sun god.

The late Kieth Green, founder of Last Days Ministries, once wrote a tract called Christmas Mourning. He didn't say that Christians should stop celebrating Christmas, but he did suggest that we should perhaps celebrate it ia bit differently than most do, and the tract suggests a few things we can do that are more in keeping with the true purpose of Christmas.
