I read up on this several years ago in a book, (What Is Natural, Jan Sapp).

Back then global warming was just starting to get attention.

This book centered on the 'crown of thorns' star fish population explosion as being the main factor in the death of the coral reefs. These star fish literally feed on the coral.

And there appeared to be a decrease in the population of the 'giant Triton' shell fish which was the only predator of the 'crown of thorns' starfish.

The article referenced in this thread did mention the problem with the 'crown of thorns', but it gives more attention to global warming as the cause.
