Could there ever be a universal culture?

I've been pondering over this. Would there ever be a universal culture - a situation where we all do the same thing: eat the same kind of food, do the same kind of dance, share ideas alike, do this and that exactly the same way?

Soccer is universally accepted. I think of globalisation.

I think of a possible same style of marriage, traditions, culture, politics and government, this and that:dunno :shrug :confused.

The science world seems to be in unity. Altho America may like to use a different symbol to represent a resistor while another country may choose something different. Country A may say: 120VAC is our standard and B may say 200VAC is....

The science world seem more united that your politics... (altho there's politics in everything)

I think it clearly possible for a universal culture to arise. In fact, I suggest that it would be inevitable unless we intentionally seek to avoid it. I suggest that advancing technology, and in particular communication technology, nudges us in the direction of a universal culture.

There is way too much diversity across this planet at this point for there to be a universal culture. I predict a long period of time before anything like that would take shape. the idea of "third world" countries would have to be completely gone by that point. Which means all the impoverished countries in Africa, and other areas of the world, would have be brought up to the modernized level of the rest of the world first.

Really? But how does it affect culture?

The people of babel seemed to have all in common sorta

The account of the Tower of Babel is the last time in history everyone on the planet spoke the same language and had the same culture. Since God confused their language people wandered off in all directions to be with people of their kind and developed their own cultures independently of the others. It is not until recently, historically speaking, where we have started to see a move toward a universal culture.

In the Millennium there will be ONE LANGUAGE...so it would not be unlikely that there wont be one culture...since people will be living GOD'S WAY.

No. Diversity is the spice of life. If you remove diversity, the result is monotony and boredom.

Perhaps variety is: have things in millions and let all share them

Not sure soccer is universally accepted. I tried watching a game the other day. Ball went back and forth 10 minutes without even a decent shot on goal. Then there was a goal. :dunno
Sorry Classik not getting it. Tried man and thought of you. I don't think your sports culture will take over where I live.

I agree. You have the metric system and the English system. Even the Commonwealth doesn't use the English system anymore. Americans will never give it up. You can probably blame American football for that. " . . . and the ball was down at the 17.12543541 meter line! 3rd and short!"

Sorry, Knot. You're out of touch with the mainstream. Last men's world cup, television ratings were five times higher than they had ever been in the US, and for US-England quarterfinal match, the ratings outstripped the NBA finals going on the same week.

Not true. Just because there has been an increase in ratings for the world cup the last time around does not mean the majority of the sports following public is into soccer.

Here is a little something I wrote up about Americans attitude toward soccer, or more specifically the World Cup: http://nowwhathavewelearned.blogspot.com/2010/06/americans-as-whole-couldnt-care-less.html

This article has something against soccer really:cry4:crying:(:bigfrown

Hope my darling American soccer squads (female) don't see this. You will kill their spirit:(

Is that the reason the male squads are a flop??? I will go report you to FIFA.

The interesting features of soccer is not just the goal. The goal gives the win actually. There are things like, dribbles, tackles, shots on target, shots off targets, passes completed, passes recovered, goal attempts (on target and off target to post or over the bar), off sides, corner kicks, penalties, red cards, yellow cards, fouls, ball possessions, fleece with the ball, counter attacks, throwings, goal kicks, turnovers, etc etc these are interesting features of soccer... And each is elaborately explicit on pitch.

The most scary part in the article is halving the size of the socccer field:shocked

Ring ring ring: hello FIFA, someone should be arrested for killsoccernism.:chin
