Bible Study Curious about Romans 7:18-20

Hi Chris and God's blessings to you!

I don't see it as the natures contending in opposition to one another because they have no volition but poses only desire. They aren't an entity, such as a person who makes choices, but are characteristics of a person.

We in our new nature are incorruptible, because I believe the new nature is the "seed" from Christ that John wrote about in 1 John 3:9. We in our old nature can do nothing but sin. It will never change because it is not and cannot be subject to the law of God (Rom 8:7). This also concurs with, "So then with the mind I myself (the person in the new nature) serve the law of God; but with the flesh (old nature) the law of sin (Rom 7:25).

When you wrote that "Paul was describing the inner turmoil of the christian walk where the good and bad natures are at odds" your concept was correct but the ongoing opposition is in reference to the Holy Spirit at odds with our old nature. "For the flesh (old nature) lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would" (Gal 5:17).
