Did Black Sabbath Get A Bad Rap ?

Did Black Sabbath Get A Bad Rap ? I had a video of Black Sabbath, and the guitar player Tony Iommi said that they had nothing to do with being perceived as, a cult movement of the dark. He said that cults were calling them up to join them, but they would not. And he also said that the record companys would put out demonic looking album covers, and that it was out of their control. And he said that they would always decline to join any cult. So I am asking you guys what is your take on this group. In 71 and 72 I saw them live.
Use to be a big fan of them. I am not anymore. But what do you all think of this group ? Because as Tony puts it, their record company was promoting them that way to selll records.I am just curious to what you all think.

Black Sabbath got their name from a Boris Karloff movie. However, one can't ignore that a 'black sabbath' is a Satanic event speaking specifically of a 'witches sabbath' or a 'black mass' in Satanist jargon.

Even though they claim that it was all an image (a format of which I believe, many bands do follow), one cannot sing blasphemic lyrics and think that there is nothing ungodly in doing so. Tony Iommi was interested in the black arts and drew many of Sabbath's lyrics from them. Have you ever listened to 'Who Are You' on Sabbath's 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath'? They are chilling and blasphemous to the core.

Granted, Sabbath doesn't even come close to the 'death metal' groups that have existed for the last 25 years. Some of those bands are definitely psycho Satanists!

Ultimately, the questions for groups are: what is there message? is it anti-God or pro-Satan? does it promote the values of the world? does it cause anarchy?

Gimmick or true belief, it is still wrong to promote it.

Thank you. they sure sent out a mixed message. All of them wore big crosses around their necks. And I do remember Sabbath Bloody Sabbath I think it was their fifth album. I threw all my Black Sabbath stuff away a few years ago, my flesh did not want to, but I had to do it. Their Video, I don't know where it is at.
But god comes first. And if it is contrary to Christ, it has to go.

Never did understand the whole wearing of the cross thing with these bands. I assume it's seen as fashionable and is worn as jewelry. :-?

Black Sabbath released the album "Master of Reality" and it had the song called "After Forever."

Here are the lyrics:

"After Forever"

Have you ever thought about your soul - can it be saved?
Or perhaps you think that when you're dead you just stay in your grave
Is God just a thought within your head or is he a part of you?
Is Christ just a name that you read in a book when you were in school?

When you think about death do you lose your breath or do you keep your cool?
Would you like to see the Pope on the end of a rope - do you think he's a fool?
Well I have seen the truth, yes I've seen the light and I've changed my ways
And I'll be prepared when you're lonely and scared at the end of our days

Could it be you're afraid of what your friends might say
If they knew you believe in God above?
They should realize before they criticize
that God is the only way to love

Is your mind so small that you have to fall
In with the pack wherever they run
Will you still sneer when death is near
And say they may as well worship the sun?

I think it was true it was people like you that crucified Christ
I think it is sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced
Will you be so sure when your day is near, say you don't believe?
You had the chance but you turned it down, now you can't retrieve

Perhaps you'll think before you say that God is dead and gone
Open your eyes, just realize that he's the one
The only one who can save you now from all this sin and hate
Or will you still jeer at all you hear? Yes! I think it's too late.

Any thoughts or comments?

Ooh, can I play too? :-D

"Sweet Leaf"

ALRIGHT NOW!
Won't you listen?

When I first met you, didn't realize
I can't forget you, for your surprise
you introduced me, to my mind
And left me wanting, you and your kind

I love you, Oh you know it

My life was empty, forever on a down
Until you took me, showed me around
My life is free now, my life is clear
I love you sweet leaf, though you can't hear

Come on now, try it out

Straight people don't know, what you're about
They put you down and shut you out
you gave to me a new belief
and soon the world will love you sweet leaf

I was told that on the back of one of their albums it had their acknowledgment of what the gospel said and that they refused it.

Below are some song quotes from different releases.

From "Cornucopia:"

Take a life it's going cheap
Kill someone no one will weep
Freedom's yours just pay your dues
We just want your soul to use

From "Under the Sun:"

Well I don't want no preacher telling me about the god in the sky
No I don't want no one to tell me where I'm gonna go when I die
I wanna live my life; I don't want people telling me what to do
I just believe in myself, 'cause no one else is true

Dio continued in his role as lyricist for 1981’s The Mob Rules, and his lyrics began to take a slightly darker turn. On Voodoo, he intones;

Call me a liar, you knew you were a fool, but that's cool, it's all right
Call me the Devil, it's true. Some can't accept but I crept inside you.
So if a stranger calls you, don't let him whisper his name
'Cause it's Voodoo, oh!
Fade into shadow, you'll burn. Your fortune is free, I can see it's no good
Never look back, never turn. It's a question of time 'till you’re mine and you learn

From "Headless Cross:"

I've been blinded, lost and confused,
darkness will call me no more.
Heaven is no friend of mine,
no god ever knocked on my door. (Black Moon)

Yes, in my teen years I was a big Dio fan (never listened to him in Sabbath, though). I still like his music but his themes were dark and borderline occultic. I haven't listened to any of his stuff since 1990, however. (I'm an 80s metal fan).

Sigh...the days when I was ignorant and unknowing. How free from care and responsibility they all were.

Black Sabbath released the album "Master of Reality" and it had the song called "After Forever."
Bought that album when it came out. it was their 3rd album. And the Sweet Leaf song was what I was about then. And After Forever talks about God in a postive way. But yet today Ozzie calls himself the prince of the dark. But the former raised Catholic, Marilyn Manson is much worse than Ozzy.

The symptoms of "Sweat leaf". :o

"Fairies wear boots"

Goin' home late last night
Suddenly I got a fright
Yeah I looked through the window
and surprised what I saw
Fairy boots were dancin' with a dwarf
All right now!

Yea, fairies wear boots and you gotta believe me
Yeah I saw it, I saw it, I tell you no lies
Yeah fairies wear boots and you gotta believe me
I saw it, I saw it with my own two eyes
All right now!

Yea, fairies wear boots and you gotta believe me
Yeah I saw it, I saw it, I tell you no lies
Yeah fairies wear boots and you gotta believe me
I saw it, I saw it with my own two eyes
All right now!

So I went to the doctor see what he could give me
He said Son, Son, you've gone too far
'Cause smokin' and trippin' is all that you do
Yeah!

So Lewis, I think you got your answer. Sabbath is NOT something any Christian should be listening to at all. :o

In the liner notes of the Reunion CD they give credit to the Church of Satan for helping them become popular in America.

A tree is known by its fruit. Black Sabbath could have the must theological correct lyrics in the world, but if their lives are lived in direct opposition, it really doesn't matter. Also, the music itself is heavy, oppressive, and hopeless sounding.

Black Sabbath-never believed what they sang, in numerous interviews they talked about it-They all believe in God and wear crosses
they wrote their music to shock people, to get people talking-bad publicity is good publicity
I own tons of their albums, its all just noise
I mean whats more important someone fallows a religion but thinks nothing about what it says and is a bad person at heart
or someone who doesn't fallow religion but believes in God and Jesus and worships in their own way

my Black Sabbath albums are side by side with my ABBA and polka albums (and all the other junk I like) its all just fluff-take it for what it is (nothing special)

Neither. There are right ways to worship and many wrong ways as well. There is also a arm length's list of passages in the OT and NT I can quote, but I'll just quote this for now.

Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

We are known by our lifestyles; what we say, what we do, how we conduct ourselves in public and in private. We are known by our fruits.

very true-but listening to something and believing it are very different

I am not gonna listen to a Sabbath album and go burn down a church for example-truth be told I rarely listen to the words themseves, its really about the melody and sound for me
in the end its all just noise that goes in your head-and its just all for money
no one really believes what they sing-maybe those hardcore satanists in norway actually burning down churches and shotgunning people-, but their music is a bit more extreme (though really funny)
I don't listen to gospel alot but one can clearly tell the better genre of musicianship
someone saying love your fellow man in a nice environment or a guy screaming downright hateful stuff throwing pigs blood at the audience-even non christians can admit that's a little much
in heavy metal, in general-its usually the people in it who make more of an impact-rather then their music, because they freely admit-its all just for shock value

Man, it seems a lifetime ago that I would listen to BS. They were my favourite band when I was a teenager. I started playing the bass from Geezer influence (who in turn was inspired by Jack Bruce). I play the bass to this day. They were dark and heavy...yet there was an innocense back then (like me). Definitely fit the depressing atmosphere of my world back then. That life is long gone!!!! :yes
