Did Christ Rise On Saturday Or Sunday?

Did Christ Rise On Saturday Or Sunday?

Most denominational people will agree that Jesus Christ rose from the dead on Sunday, but
there are those in the religious community who deny this fundamental point. Some argue that Jesus
rose on Saturday, and as a result, they worship on Saturday, the seventh day of the week, just as the
Jews did in the Old Testament. This disagreement concerning the day of Christ’s resurrection
revolves around the subject of the Sabbath day. In this short article, we will address both issues and
resolve the matter once and for all.
First, we must recognize that Christians are not bound to keep the Sabbath day. When Jesus
died for our sins, He nailed the requirements of the law of Moses to the cross. Paul confirms this
point in Colossians 2:14-16 when he says, “Blotting out the handwriting of requirements that was
against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross...Let no man
therefore judge you in meat or in drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the
Sabbath days.†It is clear from this passage alone that Christians have been freed from the bondage
of the law of Moses. We are not bound to keep the Sabbath. Many New Testament passages show
that the old law has been replaced (Acts 15:10; 2 Cor. 3:3-9; Gal. 5:1-4; Heb. 8:13). Under the new
covenant, Christians are to observe the first day of the week (Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 16:1-2), not the
Sabbath. Some want to distinguish between the law of Moses and the law of God in the Old
Testament, but their efforts are in vain when we consider verses like Ezra 7:6 and Nehemiah 10:29.
With this doctrinal point behind us, let us move onto the true purpose of this article- did Jesus
Christ rise on Saturday or Sunday? To establish that Jesus rose on Sunday, we will consider two
accounts of His resurrection from the gospel letters.
First notice the resurrection account in Mark 16. Several points are made here which prove
conclusively that Jesus rose on Sunday, not Saturday. It says in verse one, “And when the Sabbath
was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices,
that they might come and anoint Him.†What day is it? The first day of the week, as the Sabbath had
already past. Seventh-Day Adventists will argue that while the women came to the tomb early on
Sunday, that Jesus had already risen on Saturday. But their theory falls apart when the remainder of
the chapter is considered. Notice verse nine, “Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the
week.†This proves that Jesus rose on Sunday, the first day of the week.
The account in Luke, however, is much more powerful and effective. Let us notice several
verses throughout the chapter, beginning in verse one. It says in Luke 24:1, “Now upon the first day
of the week.†This verse is short and simple. As with the account in Mark, the first day of the week
is under consideration. In verse seven, angels reminded the women of Jesus’ words when He said,
“The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day
rise again.†Jesus would rise the third day, and we find that Sunday was the third day since His death.
Finally, consider verse 21, “But we trusted that it had been He which should have redeemed Israel:
and beside all this, today is the third day since these things were done.†This proves conclusively that
Jesus rose on Sunday. Not only is the first day of the week, NOT the Sabbath, under consideration
here, but reference is made to it being the third day since Jesus’ death, the foretold day of His
resurrection.
Our Lord died on Friday, the day before the Sabbath. In John 19:31, we are told that “The
Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on
the Sabbath day, (for that Sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be
broken, and that they might be taken away.†When they came to Christ, He was already dead. They
took Him down from the cross before the Sabbath began and was buried. Three days later, as seen
in Luke 24, Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week- Sunday. Who can deny these
simple points? Only those who wish to bind the Sabbath and force the Bible to fit their doctrine

I Lewis always leaned towards Saturday, here are some very interesting links on this subject.

On what day was our Savior resurrected?
Correcting the Sunday myth!

Good Friday is a Myth;
Jesus Died on a Wednesday!!

What if Jesus rose on Saturday night rather than on Sunday, in which case He would have been crucified on Wednesday rather than on Thursday or Friday?

I believe this is one of those non-essential things and we should have tolearnce. :shrug

Hi

He died on Wed. and rose on Sat. just before sunset = Three days and three nights

jewish days started at sundown, not at midnight like they do now to us. have had it told to me in terms of ancient jewish days and it worked out to sunday, but i do not think it matters. all that matters is that is on the first day of the week, now to some people the first day of the week could be on different days. i believe as long as we are doing what were told on what we consider the first day of the week it doesnt matter

Yay, my daughter was on the ball this morning and earned a longer lunch time, so I'm jumping in.

As the Bible tells us and as was quoted before:

John 19:30-31: When Jesus therefore had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" and He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. The Jews therefore, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (Saturday), for that Sabbath was a high day, asked Pilate that their legs might be broken.
The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man, and of the other man who was crucified with Him; but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.

What was the day of preparation? Friday.
When did Jesus die according to the inspired word of God? Friday.

John 20:1 Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone already taken away from the tomb.

What is the first day of the week to all known Western calendars, including the calendar used in Jerusalem during this time-frame? Sunday.

The Jewish day does indeed begin at sundown the night before, so the "day" Jesus died began on Thursday night: Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night = 3 nights. Friday day, Saturday day, Sunday day, and rose again = 3 days.

I don't know, this all seems crystal clear to me? :shrug

He was crucified at 3PM of Passover Eve. By the time He was pulled off the Cross and brought to the tomb if Joseph, it was near 6PM (sunset).

Key verse:

Mat 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Also remember, it was a Passover week, so there were two sabbaths that week. Now, Jesus mentioned both days and nights, therefore His prophecy must be spot on. We must also remember to forgo the names of days and use the sunrise to sunrise way of day reckoning.

All we know from the Bible is He was raised up after sunset but before sunrise of the first day of the week. Friday is an impossibility. Thurs. is plausible, but Wed. fits the best.

Passover Eve. was on a Wed. (day 4 of their calendar). This is when He was crucified. Remember, the Jews had to inspect their sacrificial lamb for four days, in accordance to their laws. He rode into town on the first day (our Sunday). So, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Four days!

All must fit prophecy. If He was laid in the tomb just prior to sunset of day four (also the start of day five), this is where we mus start counting, in accordance to the three days and night prophecy.

Wed. sunset to Thursday sunrise is night one. Thursday sunrise to sunset is day one (and also a high Sabbath... Passover). Thursday sunset to Friday sunrise is night two. Friday sunrise to sunset is day two. Friday sunset to Sat. sunrise is night three. Saturday sunrise to sunset (of the weekly Sabbath) is day three.

I could really go into detail, but I'll provide this link instead:

Yes, scripture is clear, but only when all the facts are known and accounted for.

Hi Vic

Yes, I could also, but I didn't want to toot my horn. I might be found guilty of starting the great tribulation. :rolling :yes :shame

Jesus died Wednesday ''Passover day'' the day after Passover was the ''high day'' or Sabbath, and He more than likely rose Saturday night after sun down which would have been the first day of the week, as God's days start with evening then morning via Genesis 1

LOL

Even I should have been more specific. It is not about when he died. He did die on Wed. , But the timing starts as to when they put him in the sepulchre. He was put in the heart of the earth just before sunset . So he would rise just before sunset Sat. :eyebrow

Sunset to sunrise is the first night - sunrise to sunset is the first day. A full day starts at sunset, and ends at sunset. :chin :yes

The two Mary's came on the first day of the week, along with other women. The word day here represents sunrise, as the day is about to dawn. It was still dark when they arrived at the sepulchre, just before the dawn of the day. Upon the dawn of the day they found the stone rolled away, after the dawn of the day, they found the tomb empty , as the angel had shown them. :study

Jesus died Wednesday evening...and was resurrected on Saturday evening, which is the beginning of the first day of the week. The church always gathered for suppers in the evening...so all meetings were in the evening, Saturday night being the principal gathering of the week. People went to work on Sunday. :yes

I have to agree with Watchman.I don't believe Jesus would have been resurrected before sunset. It doesn't fulfill the three nights/days prophecy and it would have Jesus being resurrected during the weekly sabbath. The Biblical account that tells us Mary found an empty tomb... just as it was about to dawn. Like I mentioned earlier, the Bible leads us to believe it happened sometimes after sunset of the previous day, but before sunrise of day one.

Yeah, it may not be an essential belief, but the truth is important nonetheless. It helps us eliminate any possible contradictions between the death/resurrection account and Messianic prophecy relating to it. :yes

The day Jesus was put to death, was the day in which was the day of preparation. The day before the sabbath. Sunset starts a new day . So his body had to be taken down and prepared and layed in the seplechure before sunset. The next day, which starts at sunset, is a sabbath day, and a day of rest. Joseph of Arimathaea took the body of Jesus and wraped him in fine linen, and lay him in his own tomb before sunset (darkness). And he rolled a stone in front of the opening. The next day (meaning after sunset) during the darkness of the night, before sunrise. The chief priest and the Pharisees came unto Pilate and reminded Pilate that he said he would rise three days and three nights later after his death. So Pilate ordered that they seal the stone and put guards to watch, so that none of the Jews would come and steal his body away by night, during this three days and three nights period of time.

The three days and three nights had passed. Which was Saturday, or the seventh day, at the very end of the Holy Sabbath day . And the guards and the stone were still in place, and Christ rose from the dead before sunset (darkness). After sunset, became the first day sabbath, and as it began to dawn , an earth quake took place, and the angel of the Lord moved the great stone, and the guards for fear fell down as dead men.

Jesus Christ was loosed from the bondage of death on the Holy Sabbath day, the seventh day of rest, just before sunset (darkness). Which is also the day in which they criticized Jesus for healing on the Holy day Sabbath, when he loosed the bondage of the woman - Luke 13:16.

Well, this is my belief, and I'm sticken too it. Unless someone can show me something I am over looking.

Bless - MM
