Did the Bible teach NEVER to swear AT ALL?

The bible says we shouldn't use the name of the Lord our God invain. I know this. In vain? (this is as if it could be vainly used). My question is, can one really swear without mentioning God or anything related to God?

Examples: By God I gotta break your head, for God's sake...I didn't beat him, I swear I came early for work, Truth to God, Heaven knows, etc

Eph_4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eph_1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,....
When we are adopted we take the name of the adopted father. How many call Him Father ? do we have the right?
The Canadian citizenship ceremony gives the option of 'affirming' rather than 'swearing'; though in law they amount to the same thing.
This is a matter of oaths in a broader context, of course.
Blessings.
"Taking God's name in vain" isn't the same thing as vulgar language, swearing an oath, etc. (As long as you are not taking God's name in vain when you do these things.) Now that doesn't mean that Christians should go around using vulgar language, etc. We have a testimony to uphold afterall, and we also need to think about our goals. For example, why would you tell someone to "Go to hell"? A Christians goal should be to love people and want to see them saved from hell, not go there.
Hi Obadiah,
When we claim the name of Jesus, and then proceed to use vulgar language, I think we are taking the name of the Lord in vain. When people look at us using foul language, they see a misrepresentation of God.
Not using the Lord's name in vain refer to yelling how holy, religious, and close to God you are and then sinning the same or worse than one that doesn't claim this.
When it says do not curse it is talking about actually putting curses on people.
The problem with that is how does swearing really convince one that you are telling the truth more than just saying yes or no? It's just adding more words. I tend to be a little suspicious of people who swear. It's almost as if they know they are lying and trying to be convincing. Same thing with people who say to be honest... What's that mean, that usually they're not? lol.
maybe ......maybe not :D :lol
Yeah, as I said; "that doesn't mean that Christians should go around using vulgar language, etc. We have a testimony to uphold afterall..." Not all vulgarity contains that Lord's name (the origin of the word "vulgar" actually came from what the educated people used to call the dialect of the uneducated common people centuries ago. Not necessarily dirty, just low class) , but I hope no one took what I said as meaning I think it's OK for Christians to go around using foul language. It's not. Not even when you are around other people who use it.
