How is it safer? What risk? In what way is an outward symbol unsafe? Symbols have been used throughout Christian history to identify oneself as a believer and to move one's heart to seek God, to think and meditate upon. Seeing a cross brings to remembrance the sacrifice of Christ and reminds one what their focus should be on, what their thoughts should be on, etc.
If I took away every single physical symbol from you're home would it have any effect on you're remembrence of the sacrifice of Christ? Would it make you forget what you're thoughts should be on?
And? Much of the early church welcomed persecution, a concept which is utterly foreign to the modern western Church. I hope I never have to go through something like that but if I do, I don't care, and I don't care if I have a mark on myself, in my house, or on my car that causes me to be rounded up. I am neither ashamed nor afraid.
So you wouldn't go into hiding if there was a serious warrant out on all Christians?
I have never seen a cross or Ichthus fish used for anything but a reference to Christianity, so I fail to see where there is any confusion at all.
The whole reason Christians used it as a secret symbol is because Greeks, Romans, and many other pagans used the fish symbol before Christians. So they were safe using it becasue they would not draw attention. But what were the pagans using it for? Fertility symbol?
There are also MANY different types of crucifix symbols which have been used for occult purposes.
