WoW... What the... I had a few things come to mind before i read it was found in the kitchen...
What position is it in? Is it vertical like in the picture or is it actually horizontal like on a benchtop?
It looks like there is a spring, possibly 2 underneath and it looks like a tank...
Then there is the obvious shiny raw metal plate in the center...
Look... Its old school... Before my time, which makes me very curious as to what it is...
Someone else might know but for now i'll have a bit of a stab in the dark and say a stove...
U fill up that tank with wood and start a fire... Then that metal plate conducts the heat... Hey its just a guess...?

Liberia and Myanmar are the only other countries still using this obsolete method of counting with fractions
Because of America we all need two sets of everything; taps, dies, drill bits, spanners, lol...
Oh is that 6mm or 1/4", 13mm or 1/2", 10mm or 3/8", 3mm or 1/8", 25mm or 1", 19mm or 3/4". It gets tiring...?
Then u have to sometimes convert the fraction into an imperial decimal... Man... What a pain...?
And i only just remembered we were talking about taps and dies cos uv got so many different thread types and coarseness and other specs... BSB, NPT, there's heaps
Leave that imperialist measurement system already... That dictatorial, oppressive counting method...
Join us and defect over to metric already...☺

I'm sure our surveyors don't measure their marks in exact measurements ,oh wait they do.1 meter 300cm or 1.3 meters or 1 and 3/10 meter .I read up on historical surveys of houses I photo ."Standard"... Is that what u guys call it... Ok, we call it imperial. To us its non-standard

I know the conversions ,only,temperature do I seldom use .
lol the sound of using 170000 gallons of water or its equivalent in liters .on a water bill.

our scientusts use metric ,our maps are in both metric and miles for the military and go out learn too fly and your country uses our military map methods on this and theirs .the scale for that 1:400000 inches on maps .I learned on 1:50000.just switch protractars and its the same.

If your dealing with properties then the measurements and math wouldn't be that difficult...
But it gets much harder in engineering... Machining and fabricating
Physics in imperial... Im getting a headache just thinking about it...

I've to convert a few into metric. U just have to basically multiply everything by 25.7...
Ye temperature doesn't actually have a conversion... Its got a chart conversion but not a mathematical one...
Pull up Fahrenheit to Celsius on google. 32f is 0c... Now type in -40... -40 is -40...
Its an interesting one u just need a chart... Or google these days... Lol

There are many fields of science. Maybe it depends which one.
I learnt in engineering notation (like km) and scientific notation (like 10x) in metric.
Engineering notation in imperial would be an absolute nightmare
Scientific notation, now that i think about, it isn't specifically metric, i suppose u could still use imperial with it
But then again everything is to the power of ten and that is very metric
Both... Ok... I noticed in the UK they are full metric apart from their roads. They use miles
Aviation is dominated by American imperialists too... LoL... 30,000 feet... Im fairly sure they have oppressed the whole industry worldwide as well... LoL... Including Europe and Airbus... Lol... Boeing is finished now but...
American industry is finished now i think. It certainly isn't what it was unfortunately and with this covid thing and election who knows what is about to happen. The future is very uncertain all of the sudden

your distance is in kilometers ,the photos of map scale in inches ,overlayed to a square kilometre .
scale on the bottom is in metric and standard on those maps.in space degrees aren't used but by mils .one degree is 60 mils and we use that for bombing and artillery .
because we alone with norad can track space and air movements that's probably why .if you used your own method and language travel might be confusing .the Chinese would use theirs ,Spanish theirs even in the use of imperial quarts and quarts theirs a difference .
.6 miles equals 1 kilometer roughly .we plotted distances in kilometers and converted it into the odomoter in,miles to know how far if using a vehicle ,by foot a pace count is used and no one is is the same ,they measure out 100 meters and everyone walks it and knows their own ,its not for survey work here.surveying is precise .even in imperial work .

10 by 1.25,or 10 by 1.5 those aren't fractional .I convert the easiest ones to decimal by,memory.
never mind the European battery in,metric. amp hours versus cold cranking amps or power is in joules not watts .
I'm not a machinist ,but I can use both metric and standard and don't care ,neither is more or less accurate ,metric is easier in its usage a 10 based system and names.

Answer: it's a flour bin used back in the day when you had to sift your flour. It was built into a white cabinet that had the metal pull out shelf to roll pie crust and a metal bread drawer. My mom and my grandmother use to have these. This one is in my kitchen, it belongs to the landlord.

if my wife wasnt away, i would have showed her and got the answer as she would know. with all these derelict homes i see and sometimes enter, i am amazed given the old ones i pass by i haven seen this or in photos of older homes or part of a tour. people do live in pre 1900 homes here and turn of the century. there is an apartment here that used to charge you for using the refrigerator and they had a dedicated timer and meter to it. i know the place it still stands i have photos of it. my avatar will become it for a time.

Interesting fact. The patent date range from Jan 9, 1900 through Nov 5, 1919. It's listed as very rare and someone has one just like it on eBay for $260. I remember sharpening a lot of pencils with that as it was like a toy to play with until I got yelled at because all the pencils were sharpened down to a nub.
humble soul you get half credit as you got the sharpener part right.
