I mean really type without looking at the keys and placing your fingers in the proper position. I just discovered tonight while watching something in the dark and typing on my laptop at the exact same time I can pretty much type without looking at my keys now. I don't have any way to explain this except muscle memory that I'm actually using right now as well believe it or not! :mouthdrop So I might as well teach myself the proper position to have my hands while typing now. :)

HIR,

I'm a touch-typist and it is one of the best skills I ever learned. This Wikipedia article gives the essential method I use with the main row of keys the middle row: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touch_typing

I was on the faculty of a theological college and my wife taught this course on touch-typing. I took the course back in 1985 and have been using it ever since. It is super fast and when I use MS Word it picks up spelling and grammatical errors to help with proofing.

I took a couple of courses back in the early 80's as well. It was great. I was in High School and surrounded by a bunch of pretty girls.

It was all IBM Selectrics in those days. With a big ol ball that jumped up and struck the paper.
MAG cards had just come out...

The reason I went to this class was that my Uncle became a Green Beret in Viet Nam because he could type up the reports. (Rare enough skill in the Army)
And my handwriting is atrocious. So I was going to have to type reports in college no matter what. Had no idea about computers in the future.

I find it funny. My wife hunt and pecks. I'm a touch typist. She is a writer and works in an office. I'm an electrician and work on construction sites.

Yes, I can actually type rather fast. I haven't timed myself since I was in high school typing on that electronic typewriter.

Clerk is an mos,42a.

So both of you guys have been knowing how to type since I was even born! :shock I took a computer class in high school but that was so long ago that I now have to relearn everything that I was taught. :oops2

Is an electronic typewriter and a typewriter the exact same thing? Stupid question I know but I didn't think that any typewriters were actually electronic.

No,

No.they used a computer with limited memory that iperated a hexidemical priniting system ,versus a old type writer with ink and the keys.I have used both.the qwerty type keyboard isn't needed as new computers can keep up.

Huh??

Two things,

Thanks.I'm off now,and live near an old type writer shop, and repair ,will photo his house .he sold old and newer types.

Two. The old typewroters used a sliding scroll that the keys moved as you, typed, you, either pulled a lever for return, and turned the scroll to set space between lines, new models worked as a word processing, what they were called ,these had a display of what you typed and spell corrected ,and typed only, after you corrected the problem, they also could white out errors, return in this case was the button you see now. It had a red or green,or yellow display ,old printers of this time had that green and white paper or clear and were perforated ,its used the ball like john said or the ribbon like the old type writers, optional colors were around, black, red, blue .also white to clear .

That was 30 years ago

I'm not sure what you meant in your first paragraph but only thirty years ago?? That's not too long ago as I'm going to turn thirty exactly one month from today. :biggrin

In my county am one there were many typewriter repair shops, three or more.now they are antiques.

30 is young but comparitivily isn't ancient when its tech. You couldn't print photos ,art at all.clip art was not even around then nor the internet like today

Yes, I know how to type. I am self-taught, though. I was on the computer a lot and could type fluently when I was about 13 or 14ish. I do not type properly. My fingers do not stay on the home keys...that is just difficult. In high school typing class I had to fake that I kept my fingers on the home keys all the time to pass, but when she walked away I typed my way lol. I can type 80-100wpm so I don't think it matters how I type as long as I can do so.

Now that's funny. Yes, except the first typewriters were mechanical. When you pressed a key, you manually operated the letter arm to strike the ink ribbon so if you didn't strike the key hard enough so the letter key slammed against the ink ribbon, the printed letter might not be very dark or maybe didn't print at all.

With electric typewriters, the keys you pressed were more similar to modern keyboards and the keys were operated by electric drives so typing was much easier, more reliable, and faster.

Actually, the first typewriter I used was a mechanical one back in the 1970's.

I think you're describing a word processor. There were electric typewriters that came out before word processors. They didn't have memory but were very much like the mechanical typewriter except the keys that struck the ink ribbon were electrically driven. I think some of the first ones still required manual carriage return but later ones were electrically driven.

I never took typing in school, but by golly I'm a pretty good two finger typist :biggrin

These could be.the ones I remember had a tiny screen .it would allow you type a line. Then print upon hitting enter .they corrected spelling errors.
