Thanks Hitch,

Agreed, Antichrist is anyone “that denieth the Father and the Son (1 John 2:22).” I would add Vladimir Lenin to your list and rank Lenin preeminent among such historical figures.

The question is whether John’s advice, “as ye have heard that antichrist shall come (1 John 2:18),” anticipates an archetype. Those among us who expect an archetype treat John’s comment as an implication. Those who do not expect an archetype dismiss the expectation as inference. We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, here’s a reference:

Blue Letter Bible - Lexicon

Otherwise, there may be a quandary regarding Lucifer’s supposed cohabitation of a human form (the archetypal Antichrist). As John observes:

And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.
Revelation 16:13

John appears to distinguish three distinct malefactors: the ‘dragon’ (Lucifer), the ‘beast’ (Antichrist), and the ‘false prophet’ (whomever). If John portrays the scoundrels separately, while Lucifer supposedly indwells Antichrist, would not Lucifer have to be in two places at once?
No . John defines antiChirst and never associates it with any of these things. I urege any believer to adopt and submit to the clear portions of revelation, in this case John's definition of his own term.

Ignoring definitions when they are given leads to buliding an entire one world horrible everything on the strength of an interpretation of this line;

The question is whether John’s advice, “as ye have heard that antichrist shall come (1 John 2:18),” anticipates an archetype.

Its incredibly weak especially considering the power you all grant so easily to this boog-ey man. And its not the text, but a necessary interpretaion tht even makes any of this pissible.

Johns letter is openly addressed, it is not to any certain church it is to all the churches. In some as John says plainly antiChrist is at work, in some it may be at work but not as noticibly.
John says; antiChirst is working has worked and will work. This aligns with what Jesus said wrt having troubles with the kingdom, far batter than one world blah blah this and that, which are not found or even alluded to in Jonhs letter. He warns of being seduced not rounded up and placed in what ever is the current antiChrist fad callls for. . And the work John ascribes to antiChrist is lying, lying about the nature and being of Christ. Not a word about world domination.

A famiiar objection ususally comes up about being decieved and taking the mark of the beast (sic) , but the real danger is missing current and future assults by antiChrists that are first and formost denying the person, diety and being of Jesus Christ.
Every one wants a mosnter,and obvious enemy, a tangible opponent, not clean cut mormons knocking at the door.

According to the following verses from John's Revelation, it looks like someone, or something, of a beastly nature and given to extreme blasphemy, will eventually receive power from Lucifer and proceed to make war with, and overcome, the saints, as well as wield power over all kindreds, tongues, and nations. What's the definition of blasphemy, and to whom, or what, may the following verses refer?

4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Revelation 13:4-8

I reckon this particular passage refers to first century Emporer worship, in a man , likely Nero but it probably includes the line of Emporers as well..Fits pretty well and stays in the time frame of the opening chapter.

I doubt the line in v8 requires all that dwell upon the earth be taken literally but rather is ment to contrast the christians and of course the pagans but especially the apostate jews. There is a passage that always is disturbing, and it fits right here;

But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar

Idolatry and adultery are much the same. And they here are combined with regicide, on a national scale. Israel has again chosen paganism ,in the form of Emporer worship, harlotry over their own bodily present God and King. There could never be a greater crime and only that generation was capable of commiting it. And that generation recieved the fulll weight of the blood guilt, not too long after.
