Does the Bible teach a private prayer language? In another thread, I said I wasn't going to debate tongues anymore and I most likely will not in this thread either. However, some believe the Bible teaches a private prayer language. Is this what the Bible really teaches? Is this what Paul was teaching to the Corinthians? Please provide scripture to support your view. Thanks and God Bless!

Frankly I dont believe that its the case.
I personally believe, mainly because of the complete lack of tongues in so much of the rest of the NT, especially Romans where it SHOULD be on the list of gifts there *IF* it were actually important, that Paul is simply trying to get the Corinthians to stop being so disorderly.
I personally believe that this is why he told them not to speak in tongues out loud in the church unless there was an interpreter. HOW would they know BEFORE they spoke in tongues if there would be an interpreter or not ? It would be impossible to know for a man. Only if the Spirit were actually causing the tongues would they speak in tongues *IF* they were following Pauls rules for tongues.

I think this prayer language tongues is the same. Its just Gods way (thru Paul) of getting the Corinthians to keep themselves under control..

I think it is the same too. If you have the gift of tongues, then to speak it openly or privately it is the same tongue (foreign language). Unless someone is there to interpret tongues, then we should never hear them. Of course, as you mentioned before, Dave, it doesn't seem like we need someone to speak in another language (or tongue) if we all speak the same one. The Lord bless you.

lovely,

Once again you offer us truth and grace through humility.

There IS a 'language of God'. It is called LOVE. And IF we speak IN Love, God hears our every word regardless of what 'earthly language' we speak it in.

Blessings,

MEC
