Doing a talk on Mark 1:16-20

Well I"m preparing my first ever talk. YAY! It's going to be to some 11-12 year-olds at a ministry outreach kind of deal, so there will be some Christian kids there, but at least half won't be. It's got to be about 6-8 mintues long, and jargon free.

My topic is "Jesus is our Lord" and I've chosen the choosing of the fishermen in Mark 1:16-20. I have to use the CEV:
16As Jesus was walking along the shore of Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were fishermen and were casting their nets into the lake. 17Jesus said to them, "Come with me! I will teach you how to bring in people instead of fish." 18Right then the two brothers dropped their nets and went with him.

19Jesus walked on and soon saw James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in a boat, mending their nets. 20At once Jesus asked them to come with him. They left their father in the boat with the hired workers and went with him.

Anyway, I'm preparing it as we speak and have to have an overview done within the next 12 hours. So if anyone's got some ideas feel free to post them. Thanks! :)

a talk? is that an street meeting? sounds like it.

hmm.

jesus is lord.

expound on that we must surrender our will to the lord.(dont have to use that jargon , habit)

when we come to christ we must yield our lives,

he that saveth his life shall loose it..

Street meeting...kinda.

I was thinking along similar lines. For the application for the kids - how are you going at "dropping everything" to serve God, means being different at school, like not swearing, showing teachers respect etc.

You are the salt of the earth....

Congrats, Nick. I'm sure you'll be awesome!

I think it might be nice to mention how the Lord has a calling for each one of us and as our Lord He has a purpose for all of us. I think it's important for that age group to know these things.

I've read articles about rabbi's at the time and the knowledge of scripture they needed to demonstrate to be invited to study under a rabbi to become one. As I understand it, if a rabbi saw something VERY special in a person, it was only then that they would select them with the honor of following them. To be chosen was an incredible honor, and it was a very high standard they had to meet. So now, a rabbi invites these fishermen to follow him, but they didn't know it was "Him". This had to be amazing in and of itself. "This rabbi is inviting me to follow him?"

To be covered in the dust kicked up by a rabbi was a sort of physical sign of the closeness that a disciple had with him. This is something that captures my interest in particular with this scripture. I'm not suggesting that you speak on this or that it's all that fascinating, but it is to me. I was going about my business with no real intention to change my course until I was invited to follow Him. I look back at it and I'm as amazed as they had to be that I was given this honor.

Thanks for the insight, Mike. I might touch on it, as I think it's important. Reminds me of Total Depravity...:D Maybe I'll teach the kids TULIP while I'm at it ;)

But seriously, that is quite interesting, and something I didn't know before. Thanks! :)
