Dressing in general (following on from the long hair thread)

Well, since we've had the long hair thread recently, this made me think about how we dress in general. I think our young generation is especially prone to dressing un-Christian-like; too revealing so as to make other stumble.

My personal view is that we shouldn't fuss over how we dress and look in general (I know for you girls in particular this is hard :D) but then again we need to make sure that we dress in an appropriate way, as to not make our Christian brothers and sisters stumble. That's the main thing.
I'll have to do some Bible-searching for confirming verses, though. I just am not great a remember verses off the top of my head.

So what do you think about what is acceptable dress for a young Christian guy/girl such as ourselves? Where does the Bible draw the line?

Well, my stance is that, as Christians, we should just blend in with everyone else (Jesus did this many times). Our dress shouldn't be what draws attention to us, whether it be through sexually inclined clothes or fancy accessories. No one should be able to pick out a Christian very easily in a room just because of what they're wearing (unless they have a Cross necklace or Jesus shirt on, or something).

Jesus told us not to worry about how we dress (Matthew 10:25-34), yet to do so with modesty and humility. Our "inner beauty" should be what people see when they look at us. So that we are seen for we are, Christ followers, not what we wear.

I get what you mean about being modest in how we dress, but I think that just dressing like the crowd and not standing out contradicts that point. So maniy people these days dress very imodestly, and as Christians we are not to do that.

We are the salt and light of the world, while the world lives in darkness.

When I said that we should "blend in", I did not mean that we should conform to secular dress. I just meant that we should not stand out because of any extremist dress, or anything like that. Anything wrong with some blue jeans, a tee-shirt and a hoodie?

Oh ok, well in that case I agree with you. Sorry, I misunderstood.
And I love jeans, tee-shirt and hoodies! :)

No need to apologize, bro :yes
Haha, I love 'em, too.
And, of course, my crucifix necklace.

I don't think the way we dress is particularly important, as long as we dress modestly. God judges us by our inner beauty, not our our external looks. I usually throw on whatever's comfortable.

And as long as we're not causing others to stumbe, there are other things more important IMO

I don’t think dressing should terribly important. I mean, if a girl is wear a half-shirt that shows her stomach and bra and seriously short shorts, I can understand that such is not good at all. But I get annoyed when people judge otherwise for no reason. I’m what most people would describe as a “rocker,†but some people enjoy being annoying and calling me “Satanist†because I like wearing black. Seriously, why? They’re all surprised when I tell them I’m a Christian. It bugs me quite a bit. :bigfrown

Black is definatly the best colour. :D

As long as your spirit isn't black then there's no prloblem! :)

Haha, definitely. And how could it not be? It's every color melded together to make one, really.

Haha, :amen

Well, if you're painting then yeah, black is all the colours. But if you're referring to light, then white is all the colours in 1 and black is no colour.

Well I'm an avid painter, so yeah, I am. :)

Judging by your posts, it sounds like y'all are all guys. Am I right?

Well, hey, here's a girl's opinion for you guys. First of all, don't tell us not to worry about how we look xD We're biologically inclined to want to look good all the time; and besides, it's kinda fun to put effort into your appearance.

For guys, I think modesty involves mostly not showing off your muscles too much. If you want to be particularly careful about your appearance around a girl, know that we're really attracted to abs and stuff. Just keep your shirt on and you'll be fine xD

For all you ladies out there, it's a little more complicated. The biggest thing is to know your body type, because that dictates what you can and can't wear. If you're mostly thin and petite or just plain flat, you don't have to worry as much about how low the neckline of your shirt is. But if you're the curvy type, you want tank tops and blouses with relatively high necklines, because your body's naturally gonna cause that neckline to slip a little lower than it would be on a smaller girl. If you have a top that's absolutely perfect except for a too-low neckline, that's easily fixed: just pair it with a high-necklined tank top or T-shirt. I think that showing a lot of your neck and shoulders could be a bit immodest too, so sleeveless dresses or spaghetti-strap tops are a problem as well; what a lot of girls at my church do is to pair these kinds of clothes with a cardigan, jacket, sweater, etc. So you see, it's easy to dress modestly and be fashionable at the same time- it's all about watching the neckline and pairing your clothes tastefully.

Oh, and legs- I like that rule where your shorts/skirt should go to the tips of your fingers if you put your arms at your sides, but I think a little shorter would still be okay. (Only by an inch or two, though. And mostly just for shorts- you have to be careful with skirts, because they tend to ride up when you bend over, walk, etc.) And be really careful about the waistline of your pants! I see so many girls walking around with low-rise jeans and shirts that are just barely long enough, so that when they move around a sliver of skin shows, and sometimes their underwear. Girls, be careful: they're called "low-rise" jeans for a reason. If your pants are that low, that little sliver of skin can be extremely sexual in a subtle way.

Do you boys have anything to add? What should we girls do to help preserve the purity of our Christian brothers?

Thanks for your femaile perspective! :D

For me it's the legs mostly. The short skirts really make me stumble. And if there's not much covering up top, as in the breast area, that's bad as well.

Girl, actually. A bit of a tomboy, but still a girl. :lol

Also, as you stated with the girls, I think guys should watch how low their pants are going. Most of the time, I wind up seeing boxers, but depending on what a guy is wearing, I can sometimes see a bit more.

I have a lot of problems like this with my shirts. It seems the style is to be as low as possible. I’m not curvy per se, but the shirts are low enough to easily show something. I like my normal shirts that come up a bit higher, but everything in the stores is so low. I always seem to have to have the tank tops and undershirts handy.

Nick, it would be more of an “Oh snap!†if this was a “Post Your Face†thread. :lol

But I’m used it in both reality and online, so it‘s become a running joke between my friends. :lol
