Bible Study Eat this scroll

Its a couple places in scripture, what does it mean?

'Eat this scroll', is it the same type of meaning as 'listen to these words'?

Good morning Brother kiwidan. I've always considered it as taking in the word of God. The following excerpt from a study of Revelation is one I transcribed a friend of mine gave in a study.

Gene Hawkins:
In Revelation 10:9 repeated, "And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book" Again we have to be of the same persuasion as John to ask for it, and that means that we have to want to have what is in there for us ourselves. "And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. "And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey" and this is what many may not like. When we partake of this wonderful message of the fullness of God's word there are so many revelations that we get, and so much knowledge that we get that really is sweet to our taste. When we desire to hear the things we are discussing today we can know what is going to happen in this world, and in some places exactly when it is going to happen. All of this wonderful knowledge and insight is given to us and there are so many other wonderful revelations of truth and especially the glorious provisions or things that God has made for us that are so sweet in our mouths. However when we swallow it and it becomes a part of us and in actual practical experience it can bring some very bitter experiences, and people actually draw back from that and resist this little book becoming a part of them but as I said, we are never going to be able to prophesy as John did unless we take that message into our own being.

Revelation 10:10. "And I took the little book out of the angel's hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter." John took the little book and ate it up and isn't that interesting that he knew it was going to be sweet in his mouth, but he also knew it was going to be bitter in his belly and yet he was willing to do that. The same thing must be true in my life even though I know laying hold of this message and believing it may bring me some heartache, pain, and bitterness in my belly as it were, I must still take the initiative to step up to the Angel, to ask for it to take it to eat it up. Sure enough, it was in my mouth sweet as honey, and as soon as I had eaten it, it didn't take long until my belly was bitter and there are so many things in God's word that will do that. Why? Because God is changing us from what we were to what He wants us to be and it is not always an easy road to follow but if we will do that the way that John did, then we can do also that in Verse Eleven.

A metaphor to ingest, chew, digest, and assimilate the Word of God.

I agree with this but also took it literally. We have little clue of the Kingdom (spiritual) realm and God's ways, thoughts and powers. He probably really did eat it and it probably was infused with divine power & anointing like it says...

I know one thing. If an Angel tells me to eat a scroll, I'm going to eat it.

Revelation Chapter 10 John is told to take the little book from the angels hand and eat it. It was sweet in his mouth as in the glory of the Lord that will soon come for His Bride as they have received the promise of Gods blessings for obedience and have eternal life with the Father, Deuteronomy 28:1-14, Romans 6:23. After eating the book it was bitter in the belly as those who reject Jesus and repent not of their sin will face Gods final wrath poured out on them as they cling onto their devil worshiping giving honor and glory to their idols made of hands that are gods before them, Leviticus 26:1-46; Deuteronomy 27:11-26; 28:15-19.

I agree with this but also took it literally.
Yes, we certainly can't rule out a literal meaning, since an angel was involved and the scroll could well have been of a substance that could be ingested and assimilated. But it probably did not resemble a piece of pie.

The bitterness that was "tasted" by that ingestion is meant for our own flesh. The bitterness you describe above was not to others, but to the person who ingested same.

Revelation 10:9
And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.

This "bitterness" is also associated with "wormwood." Hemlock, poison, a curse.

Yes the Word and the Spirit is a curse to the adverse works of the flesh, being against and in opposition to same. It is a bitter scroll that we do swallow, even if not observed in the fleshly senses.

Nevertheless, we Taste and See that the Lord is GOOD.

It is also termed the little book or little scroll by Divine Intent.

There is a book within the book that few will find, hence, a little book/scroll. That book is buried in allegory, purposefully hidden beyond the sights of flesh eyes who will never see it and never find it.

If we have "ingested" the little scroll, and yes, this ingestion does transpire with all who believe,

eventually, this happens:

John 7:38
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

These are the same "waters" that Ezekiel observed flowing EASTWARD out of the "temple," first as a trickle, from under the threshold eastern door of the temple. Ezekiel 47:1. Even from the "right" side of the house, and the south side of the altar. IN order to see this logistically, we have to see Jesus standing in the temple, BEHIND the altar, facing east, in order for the WATERS to flow from the "right side" "south." Looking backwards into the temple using our right side doesn't work, logistically.

East in the scriptures is the direction of EVIL.

I agree. It has been said, that the Word, is food for our spirit. This must be quite true, literally...

I've read quite a few testimonies, and sometimes they mention having a container of oil poured over them with a visitation. They say it feels like life being infused into them. That must be similar to eating a scroll I think?

You'll know when you've eaten the scroll when you hear Every Word of God, even the parts you don't like, and take them personally. It's not a meal meant for every believer. You look for example to oil upon the head. I have tasted the bitter and found it, bitter.

So did Jesus. Bitter or not, it's prolly still good for us in the long run

It is quite significant that the bitterest medicines (or medicinal preparations from herbs and plants) are the most powerful. There is a spiritual lesson in that. The bitterness that Christ experienced on the Cross was like no experience ever, but the end result was the sweetness of God's salvation.
