Jude 1:1

1Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:

Just when is a believer in Christ sanctified ? Is it before they believe or immediately after they believe ? Could it be before they were ever born ? Could it be before the world was ever created ?

Lets look at the definition of the word sanctified in our text. It is the greek word hagiazō and means:

to render or acknowledge, or to be venerable or hallow

2) to separate from profane things and dedicate to God

a) consecrate things to God

b) dedicate people to God

3) to purify

a) to cleanse externally

b) to purify by expiation: free from the guilt of sin

c) to purify internally by renewing of the soul

Lets say its the setting apart of one for the dedication and Holy Purpose of God

In our text above the word sanctified is a perfect passive participle, the subjects have been set apart once and for all, Permanently ! When was this setting apart ? Well according to the text it was before they were called. The calling here I believe to be a subjective inward call by the Holy Spirit as Per Rom 1:6-7

6Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:

7To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Rom 8:28

28And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

1 Cor 1:2,24

2Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both their's and our's:

24But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

This calling is both inward and effectual and so its placed in time.

But the sanctification that preceded it was before time, it was God setting them apart from the rest of mankind in the Decree of Election in Christ.

This their Election in Christ or Chosen in Christ is also said to be of the Father Eph 1:3-4

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

4According as he [The Father] hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

The Father hath chosen us in Him. When ? before the the foundation of the world.

The word chosen is eklegomai and means:

to pick out, choose, to pick or choose out for one's self

a) choosing one out of many, i.e. Jesus choosing his disciples

b) choosing one for an office

c) of God choosing whom he judged fit to receive his favours and separated from the rest of mankind to be peculiarly his own and to be attended continually by his gracious oversight

The word is also in the middle voice which means He for Himself. This denotes His own setting apart for Himself whom would be the recipient of all Spiritual Blessings of Salvation through Jesus Christ.

And this setting apart, sanctification took place before the foundation, so the believer, was set apart or sanctified by The Father before the foundation, this denotes Eternal Sanctification by Election. Believing in Christ in time, is evidence of this Eternal Sanctification before the world began.

Hey, there is No problem believing & understanding what God knew in Eternity about the ones who were only in Their for/knowledge, (Rom. 4:17's last part of this Truth) but if & when one teaches that they know about theirself, other than [BY FAITH] then this is not the Truth!

Like Jeremiah !

As Jeremiah the Prophet, which was a Believer in Christ and His Righteousness Jer 23:6

In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

All Believers in Christ were Saints or Sanctified by Christ Blood before they were Born physically into this world. Heb 10:10-14

10By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

12But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

13From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

14For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

Remember scripture reveals to us the Jeremiah was Sanctified by God before he came out of the womb Jer 1:5

5Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Amen, Jeremiah a Type of Believer, was set apart for the Holy Purpose of God, even before He was born a sinner out of the womb. All men are born sinners, but only God's Elect in Christ are born sinners that are already by Divine Purpose, Sanctified, or born a Saint.

God alone is immortal & knows the End from the beginning! It was satan that says that your eyes will be opened & you will become as a 'g'od, not God! And what is New? Eccl.3:15

And 'i' posted... (slightly altered)

Hey, there is No problem believing & understanding what God knew in Eternity about the ones who were only in Their for/knowledge, (Rom. 4:17's last part of this Truth)
but if & when one teaches that they know this about theirself, other than [BY FAITH] then this is not the Truth!

All of God's Elect were sanctified by God the Father in the Covenant of Grace 2 Tim 1:9, that is set apart from the rest of the world to be His peculiar people in the world Jude 1:1

1Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:

1 Pet 2:9

9But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;

The root meaning of the word sanctify is to set apart a person or thing for God, for His Holy Purpose or Use !

This Sanctification by the Father took place before the foundation of the world when He chose us in Christ ! Paul alludes to that here Eph 1:3-4

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

4According as he[The Father] hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

That Choosing was a sanctification,a setting apart !

Sanctified by God the Father !

Jude 1:1

1Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:

Sanctified by God the Father. The word sanctified here is the greek word Hagiazo:

to render or acknowledge, or to be venerable or hallow
to separate from profane things and dedicate to God
consecrate things to God
dedicate people to God

to purify
to cleanse externally
to purify by expiation: free from the guilt of sin
to purify internally by renewing of the soul

The word is also in the perfect Tense which means:

ACTION COMPLETED at a SPECIFIC POINT of TIME in PAST (●) with results CONTINUING into the PRESENT (▬►). In certain contexts the results are PERMANENT.

http://www.preceptaustin.org/new_page_40.htm

These had been set apart and acknowledged for an Holy Use and Purpose by the Father. This sanctification took place before the foundation of the World Eph 1:3-4

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

It took place before they believed or were born just as with Jeremiah before he was born was sanctified for an Holy Purpose and use Jer 1:5

5Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Now I believe all sanctification by God is premised solely upon the blood of Christ, to include Jeremiah's Jer 1:5. All for whom Christ died or gave Himself an Offering in behalf of, by that Offering, hath sanctified them forever Heb 10:10-14.

Question ? How could they have been sanctified before they are born or before they believed ? By God's Purpose as was Jeremiah Jer 1:5. In light of God's Purpose for him, Jeremiah had to still be born a sinner, dead in trespasses and sins, a child of wrath by nature even as others. He had to be born a unbeliever, an enemy of God in his mind by wicked works, nevertheless, before he was born, God had already sanctified him unto His Holy Purpose, so that means his conversion to God was inevitable in order to fulfill his God given purpose. So it is with all for whom Christ died. For Christ's blood, in the purpose of God was shed before the foundation of the world Rev 13:8; 1 Pet 1:20, so in God's Mind all whom Christ would die for in the time state, were sanctified by that offering, before time began, before they were born Jer 1:5,m and before they believed Jn 10:16;17:20.

Back to the sanctification of God the father, it refers to His Electing grace, choosing a people for Himself and Entrusting them to His Son, that He would be their Surety and Representative and preserver in the Everlasting Covenant of Grace, hence they were sanctified for the Eternal purpose of being vessels of mercy, afore prepared unto Glory !

Sanctified in Christ, then Called !

1 Cor 1:1-2

Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both their's and our's:

God does not call unsanctified people !

In other words they were first sanctified in Christ or by Christ. Yes the preposition en can be translated by also. For they were first sanctified by Christ's Offering of Himself for them. Heb 10:10

10By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

It is notable that the Author of scripture, the Holy Spirit, caused each writer of 1 Cor 1:2 and the writer of Heb 10:10 to use the perfect passive participle for the word sanctified.

So all who are sanctified by Christ's Blood, shall be called ! They shall be called to be Saints experientially !

The word called used in 1 Cor 1:2 is the same word Jude uses in Jude 1:1, which calling succeeds The Father's Sanctification and the preservation of the Son !

Hmmmmmmm

I don't have time this morning to look at the passage in its entirety but I have doubts as to whether your claim that this instance is separating the sentence as the word is a VERB and by nature alone need both a subject and an object ie. the whole of a sentence. I doubt that it is acting like a subjunctive.

Perfect participals are very rare, well done for finding one, but you have only given half a definition

A perfect passive participle describe a present state, and are often effectively equivalent to an adjective or a present participle.

The way you have described it only paints half a picture and is therefore misleading. You can't keep going around manipulating grammar to suit your theological beliefs.

A True Believer, one who partook in the Sanctifying Work of the Holy Spirit to the Belief of the Truth as Per 2 Thess 2:13, has always been a Saint before God even before they were converted. Yes even when by Nature they were children of wrath as others [Eph 2:3], when they were being enemies in their minds Col 1:21, they had already been sanctified by the blood of Christ, set apart for the use and purpose of God. They were sanctified first by the Father before the foundation of the World by their Election in Christ Eph 1:4; Jude 1:1, and secondly, they were sanctified by the Body of Christ, His Offering Heb 10:10

10By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

So they were reckoned Holy unto God because of the Blood of Christ ! Even when they were born sinners and ungodly by Nature !
