ExmouthSimon introduction

I live in Exmouth, Devon, UK. I am 64 years old, and am retired having worked for the UK meteorological office for 38 years. Myself and my wife, Maureen, are christians, and we go to St Swithuns Anglican church where we sing in the choir. We both like walking and music. I also like swimming and hang gliding and travel. I am interested in meteorology, science and astronomy, although not an expert. My understanding and interest in science has strengthened my christian faith. However, I realise and accept that some christians find it difficult to reconcile scientific understanding with the bible message. I am interested in discussing science and christianity on this forum if that is OK.

Dear Brother ExmouthSimon, it is with great pleasure I welcome you to our Christian fellowship in Jesus' name. It's about time we have a professional who can forecast the amount and time I can expect precipitation at my property. :salute
We have some very knowledgeable scientific types among us, and I look forward to your input in that forum also. I'm mailing you our
Christianity & Science agreement form by private email, and at that time I will advise our administration to add your name to allow posting in that forum. Blessings in Christ Jesus. :)

Hi ES,

Please put on your meteorologist hat and answer me this:
WHY has it been raining here by me for the past 5 weeks?
I live in sunny Tuscany, and I haven't seen any sun lately
And I DEMAND an answer!!
LOL

It feels like England - it rains almost every day and the two (three?) times I've been to London it NEVER rained.
Is there a scientific explanation for this??

Just kidding.

I'd like to welcome you to this forum. There are many interesting threads where you could post your ideas and knowledge.

I look forward to seeing you around --

Welcome,

We got a whole forum dedicated to just that topic.
I think you will enjoy those that participate there.

Hi ES

It's great to have you aboard. I'm sure you will enjoy this site and it's lovely people as much as I do.

Exmouth brings back some lovely memory's. Spent may a holiday round that area when I was a nipper.

In fact for the last 6 years my family have spent our holidays at Devon Cliffs holiday park.

Hi all,
The weather is a particular issue here over the last year or so. I love sunshine and wish we could have a real scorching summer. Unfortunately the last couple of years have been pretty awful overall. Putting on my met Office hat (I was only a fairly menial grade before retiring but I do have some understanding of weather and climate), recent loss of arctic ice combined with natural cycles and fluctuations such as El Nino have resulted in worse than average weather over the UK. The cold anomaly in ocean temperatures over the west and mid atlantic at latitudes around 50 deg north has influenced the jet stream, encouraging it further south over that part of the ocean with the result that atlantic depressions have swung round from the SW to hit the UK. Unsettled weather on average year round with warmer than average winters with SW winds, meaning more cloud and rain, particularly in the SW of the UK. When the sun does shine here I don't want to be anywhere else. However, I find myself regularly discussing with the wife where we should go next for a last minute holiday, Tenerife, Malta, Crete, USA? However, this spring has also been particularly bad in western europe, with France, the alps, northern spain and northern Italy doing as bad or worse than the UK. Hopefully things will improve in southern europe from mid june. Having said that, Devon and the SW of the UK have some of the best scenery and coastline in the UK. I love walking and swimming and hang gliding here. Simon.

Hi all, Just returned from a hang gliding hol in Laragne in the French alps. Was a great holiday, fabulous company, and superb weather, hot sun and 35 deg. The flying is awesome, soaring in rough thermals up to cloudbase 3000 ft above the mountain tops. Fabulous scenery, and balmy evenings with cicadas chirping and nightingales singing. It felt like a preview of what it will be like in heaven! Back to the wind and rain in the UK, and the aftermath of the referendum. Nice to swim in the sea and join in the church choir though. We need to pray for uk and european politics following brexit, and especially continue to pray for and do what we can to help the refugees from the violence in the middle east. It is so frustrating to see the political weakness and confusion in both europe and the uk, especially while people are still suffering with terrorism.

Are you in agreement with the exit?
What exactly is it that we're to pray for?

W

I am not in agreement with the exit. Myself and Maureen my wife both voted to remain in the EU. There are lots of problems with the eu constitution and politics, but if we had remained in then the UK would have had a say in the eu government which we haven't got now we have voted to leave. The european political situation is sliding downhill. The situation in the middle east is a mess, partly due to the west intervening in Iraq and Libya. Also the treatment of the palestinians by Israel is sadly an ongoing injustice. The isis terrorism is evil and demonic, but part of the problem is the resentment and hatred caused by the unwitting oppression and exploitation of the palestinians and other arab nations by the western nations. There are many people and christian and jewish organisations in europe and the usa who are campaigning for justice for palestine and the other middle east countries and for the refugees from those countries. These organisations include Sat7, Open Doors, the Barnabus fund, Shelterbox, and Jewish voice for peace. We can support these organisations financially and with prayer.
Exm Simon.
