falling under same condemnation as the devil 1 Timothy 3:6

In 1 Timothy 3:6, Paul describes the situation in finding an overseer in the church, to avoid "recent converts" who can fall under the same condemnation as the devil through arrogance.

How can a recent convert not be in Christ? If you are in Christ, there is no condemnation to you (Rom 8:1).

What is the nature of this arrogance, and of the condemnation that follows the new convert? I don't get it.

reading a larger portion for context and reading the one verse in several translations it looks like the condemnation that comes from being prideful is what is being discussed

iow if someone is new in Christ they probably know very little of truth and error and the tricks of the devil so they can easily fall into sin and error - so putting a new convert in a position of authority is not good for him or the congregation

1 Timothy 3 New King James Version (NKJV)
Qualifications of Overseers

3 This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a [a]bishop, he desires a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; 3 not [b]given to wine, not violent, [c]not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not [d]covetous; 4 one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence 5 (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); 6 not a [e]novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

AMP
and He must not be a new convert, so that he will not [behave stupidly and] become conceited [by appointment to this high office] and fall into the [same] condemnation incurred by the devil [for his arrogance and pride].
AMPC
He must not be a new convert, or he may [develop a beclouded and stupid state of mind] as the result of pride [be blinded by conceit, and] fall into the condemnation that the devil [once] did.
CEB
They shouldn’t be new believers so that they won’t become proud and fall under the devil’s spell.
DARBY
not a novice, that he may not, being inflated, fall into [the] fault of the devil.
PHILLIPS
He must not be a beginner in the faith, for fear of his becoming conceited and sharing Satan’s downfall.
TLB
The pastor must not be a new Christian because he might be proud of being chosen so soon, and pride comes before a fall. (Satan’s downfall is an example.)
MSG
He must not be a new believer, lest the position go to his head and the Devil trip him up.
NLV
A church leader must not be a new Christian. A new Christian might become proud and fall into sin which is brought on by the devil.
NLT
A church leader must not be a new believer, because he might become proud, and the devil would cause him to fall.
TPT
He should not be a new disciple who would be vulnerable to living in the clouds of conceit and fall into pride, making him easy prey for Satan.
WE
A church leader must not be a new believer. If he were a new believer, he might become proud and set himself up like the devil did.

1 Timothy 3 is about the responsibilities of a bishop who is ordained, consecrated or appointed by God set forth in the church who is given authority as an oversight. They are responsible for the teaching, governing and setting apart the faithful in obedience to God's commands and moral laws as it starts in their own home. Some can become prideful just as Satan was when God set him in the garden of Eden and that is there condemnation. Some even try to bring condemnation on those who are of Christ, but yet with little knowledge.

From the time we are born again spiritually we have this treasure in jars of clay, our flesh. The younger the believer is spiritually the more the opportunity to return to our flesh and the lust of the flesh. It is bad enough to see every day Christians living in the flesh and how much is that exceeded when we talk of leadership. Most of us who have been around for awhile and had some wrestling matches between our Old Man and our New Man that prepare as we may move up into more spiritual leadership. You probably have a suppport group who supports you as you also support them. A prayer life well established that keeps in as constant contact with our Head and Husband. o many things picked up in His service. A shepherd for His flock. So much more and for me it is always inspiring to be around those being used by Christ and living the life of faith.

puffed up with a bit of knowledge...i was there, as a young believer...and God thankfully worked it out, even though I'm not currently (and wasn't then, either) church-ed.

not that I'm Mr.Humility, now, but...whoa...whoa. its ok, though...Jesus has worked it out, is working it out, with a (thankfully) softer touch. :)

Here is what Romans 8:1 says -

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:1 NKJV

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Romans 8:1 KJV

For Christians who are “in Christ”, who do not walk according to the flesh, there is no condemnation.

Christians who practice the works of the flesh will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21

  • those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Will not inherit the kingdom of God is another way of saying, condemnation or damnation or being cast into the everlasting fires of hell.

Those who are in Christ, must remain in Christ, or be cast into the fire and burned.

Here’s how the scriptures teach us to remain “in Christ” -

Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. 1 John 3:24
