2 Peter 2 King James Version (KJV)
2 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
so what do you consider a false teacher/ prophet ? this is not a question answer ..looking for Bible discussion .sunday i will be teaching 2 peter 2 might i add if your a baptist and some someone is pentecostal does not make them false
Isiah 8:
20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. marks of being false . peter does give a description .. all comments welcome

There are so many different interpretations in the Christian church that it can cause confusion.
Peter tells us they are covetous and compared them to the sin of Balaam. Balaam told King Balak to lead Israel astray into prostitutes and idolatry, so that he could get a reward from the king. He was a prophet yet went against God who blessed Israel and told Balaam not to curse Israel but to bless them. So he got someone else to lead them astray and curse themselves. Very cunning! And so false teachers will try to lead us astray.

Matthew 7:20 NKJV

Therefore by their fruits you shall know them.

If they go against God's word they are false.

agreed when it comes false teaching notice peter said among you jude wrote For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. certainly by there fruits . i know a person does ministry calls himself crazy preacher .i think he started out ok but all appearance he is very charismatic he knows how to draw followers .he talks the talk does lots good works .but i see a flag of caution there are things i know and know what he has said.. Satan him self can transform himself into a angle of light . he knows the Bible really well . but this is a good start on discussion . all input welcome

false prophet is easy because when the prophecy fails you know the prophet is false

false teacher is harder - i know denominations that call other denominations false teachers simply because of theological differences - i have called people false teachers in the past and then found out i was wrong - my theological disposition opposed their theological dispositions - and in some cases with God's help i found out i was believing the wrong things and the person i called a false teacher was right - so i am interested in this discussion because i have not yet understood how any of us can judge another and accurately say who is a false teacher

false doctrines is a little easier to recognize but not by that much - we all have different interpretations of scripture and make doctrines out of our best understanding - it is only by God showing us where we are wrong or by KINDLY discussing scripture with those who disagree with us that we have a hope of finding out where we might be wrong -

but if people are absolutely convinced they are right and others are wrong the discussion usually becomes unkind and unprofitable for learning from each other - i understand we all need to stand firm in the faith but sometimes we get too dogmatic and won't be able to see our own doctrinal errors even when pointed out to us -

and lastly imo we put too much focus on doctrinal differences - especially when it's hard to know for sure who is right and who is wrong - imo we should put more focus on loving God and loving others and living a life pleasing to God - Jesus said all the law and all the prophets hang on these 2 OT commandments - love the Lord with all your heart soul mind strength and love your neighbor as yourself - Deuteronomy 6:5 - Leviticus 19:18 -

i like your comments so is it false because it does not fall in line with what we believe ? here is a problem i see in the church many only know the the church doctrine reads and what mom/dad/gma/gpa believed. i was asked to leave a church after i mentioned foot washing one person through a fit.then it spread like wild fire .
i have heard it said they are of the devil speaking in tongues .. i dont understand this gift i have pondered it but never grasped it.
i think some things we need to let God sort out you made a point that i have brought out and try to stand on..

this is a big problem that creates division among denoms. i know of a tent revival/meeting that was held on a baptist church ground. that my understanding was to be a community service. a man was speaking in tongues out loud or to him self i dont know. but the baptist pastor went up and told him he couldn't be doing that. imo tongues should be done decent and in order. we are to quick to judge others beliefs. preacher are often jealous of other preachers. then judgment follows if not careful

truth

so what do you consider a false teacher/ prophet ?

Anyone who takes away from or adds to the work that Jesus Christ finished on the cross. Taking away from it by saying he wasn't really the Son of God, didn't really die, didn't really conquer death and hell or even by saying that he only died for a certain group of people. And adding to it by saying that we're only really saved if we complete such and such work.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

So simple and so inclusive - for anyone who believes.

good points - i agree with what you said - i see the same thing

the bible speaks of false teachers and doctrines of demons - so obviously there is such a thing

what i see thrown around so freely among christians is MOSTLY doctrinal disputes

as far as the false doctrines i see them for sure - and when i talk to people about their false doctrines they don't see them because they are indoctrinated - this is also the reason why i didn't see the false doctrines i was indoctrinated with - of all the false doctrines i was set free from it was God and scripture and kind christians talking to me that helped me get free - calling me a cult or deceived or espousing doctrines of demons didn't help me - i only heard the hate and anger being shot at me

so you mention speaking in tongues - some groups think it is false teaching to say it passed away - some say it is false teaching to say it is for today - i asked God what He said and as a result of what God told me i speak in tongues - yet the debate continues - both sides calling the other false - so how do we deal with this? - someone is teaching truth and someone is teaching false -

i guess this is why i see everything as doctrinal differences - and some doctrines are false and some are correct - and we debate them - sometimes accusing each other

but when the bible warns of false teachers is this the kinds of issues the bible is talking about?

false teacher? - i would say jim jones - if you watch videos of him he doesn't give glory to Jesus - he gives glory to the religions of the world - what is that? - so every christian would agree jim jones and his teachings are false if they heard him speak

but when baptists and pentecostals and catholics and calvinists call each other false what do we do with that? - imo we have to stop calling each other false and start discussing one specific doctrine at a time - praying our way through it - hoping to find the truth

The Moravian Church has a motto (quoted from a popular source) ... “In essentials unity. In non-essentials liberty. In all things charity.”

False teachers are really not that hard to identify if you look out for violations of the absolute essentials.
  • No man can be saved apart from Jesus Christ, so any gospel that advocates a way to God that is not Christ focused is a false gospel.
  • Jesus is both fully God and fully man. John 1 makes it clear that Jesus existed as “the Word” in the beginning and all of the Gospels make it clear that Jesus was a real flesh and blood man who really died on a cross. Any gospel that denies either His divinity or His humanity is false.
  • We are saved by grace through faith, a gift from God, and not due to any works of the Law or innate righteousness in us. Anyone who teaches otherwise is a false teacher of a false gospel.

The things we debate ... free will vs predestination, eternal security vs the need to persevere ... are all non-essentials. If God predestines people to salvation, then believing that you had free will will not prevent your salvation. If salvation is based on our free will, then believing that you were predestined will not prevent your salvation.

If you believe that you are saved because you are a good person and Jesus was just a man, then you have serious problems with God.

So that is the secret. Remembering what “salvation” really is ...
[Romans 10:8-11 NIV]
8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, "Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame."

best thing we dont allow us to be caught up in it and that is a full time job

yes - good point - jealousy - competition - they do play a part in this mess for sure

there are many out of order things done - the use of the gifts of the Holy Spirit are generally the only things that get expressed in an out of order way -

i know of an immigrant from argentina - argentina had and maybe still does have a mighty move of God going on there - he shared with us how they kept order - they had classes/services for new christians - they were not allowed to prophecy or speak publicly in service in tongues until they had special guidance and teaching - this helped them to grow in scripture truth - and as a result the powerfully spiritual services were very much in order -

most churches do not help new christians this way - so brand new christians get confused and do out of order things

in my church my pastor is very prophetic and he deals with everything in an amazingly gifted way - by the leading of the Holy Spirit he knows when something is wrong and he goes up to them and puts his hand on their shoulder and kindly and softly says - thank you my brother/sister - this is how he interrupts something that is out of order - he doesn't want to embarrass the new christian - neither does he want to dishonor the precious Holy Spirit by allowing things that are out of order/not led by the Holy Spirit - and then after the service he meets with the person to pray with them and give them guidance on how to be led by the Holy Spirit in public services and in private life

aww but some preach Jesus for self motivation

i have heard it said they are of the devil speaking in tongues
Speaking in tongues is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Saying it is of the devil is blaspheming the Holy Spirit.
Not a good idea.

Are you talking about the ones that liken Jesus to some kind of self-help mystical guru? or the ones that are seeking leadership in a church to serve themselves rather than serve God?

the ones that are seeking leadership in a church to serve themselves rather than serve God?
more or less. i know of one that sure appears in that direction . he has fund raisers he had a church had all kinds of followings i see flags

i agree it is a gift many believe left with the apostles . imo many worship the Gift not the giver-CHRIST
