If that is true, then why did Columbus try to convince Rome to foot the bill when he wanted to prove the world was a sphere?

He didn't. All educated peple knew the world was a sphere. His critics told him that he had grossly underestimated the circumference of the Earth. He had. If America had not been in his way, he never would have made it.

You don't think Rome was trying to hide the fact they knew it was true.

No, no one argued that it wasn't spherical.

They wouldn't do anything like that!

That's right.
