Fantasy

I understand we have a Christian fantasy topic already but i wanted to broaden the scope to include all types of fantasy.

Who enjoys fantasy?

I find fantasy very hit and miss. There is a lot of fantasy out there that is simply just pulp, indulgent, fiction - not at all representative of good writing. But i have a few favourite fantasy authors that are great storytellers. At the top of the list are Terry Pratchett and Robin Hobb.

I like Ted Dekker's Circile Trilogy and Karen Hancock's Guardian King (4 book set).

i used to read fantasy a lot, but that was before i entered college. Now? Every book seems like a textbook D: its pretty sad. I do wish I can find some time to just pick up a good book and read it just for fun.

I'm not really into fantasy. I WANT to be, but I'm not. It's like when a guy likes and you don't like him, You WANT to like him back, but you just don't. That's what it's like with me and fantasy books. The only fantasy books I really like are the Harry Potter books. That would be fantasy right? :study

I love fantasy, but I do not read books that are written by non-christian authors. it's not a matter of principle, but unbelievers carry the spirit of the anti-christ, and i can actually feel the darkness when i read it. i loved Eragon, but it messed me up for a good week or so, kind of a mind-blinding spirit and a spirit of confusion. I mean i can't even read history books written by unbelievers, i am really sensitive to spirits, a blessing and a curse.

are any of the authors listed here christians? does anyone know of any christian fantasy authors?

I really don't know about any more recent authors. But the authors of the fantasy books that belong to the most famous ones: Lord of the Rings and the Narnia chronicles were both Christians [they were friends and Tolkien, a dedicated Catholic actually influenced C.S.Lewis in his becoming a Christian!]

I was so fascinated when I first read the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, at the age of 10 or 11. So amazing, I still love these books so much and since that time I have read them yet 5 more times!
The Narnia books belong to my beloved ones too.
I don't care so much about recent fantasy because it can never be as awesome as LOTR :)
But I enjoy Pratchett's Discworld series too! So unique and humorous. I have read some of the books multiple times too. :)
I have read Harry Potter too and they're great too. It always fascinated me how the events often twisted and turned many times and ended up entirely unexpectedly. It was all so well thought out, the stories and the characters. I haven't seen all the movies yet, but surely the books are better because movies always miss something out [they have to or else the movie could be like 8 hours long :P]

I was just about to give Robin Hobb a chance, and I happened upon your post. What do you recommend? Does she have anything without dragons? Not that I'm down on dragons, but everything is about a dragon now-a-days.

The Lord of the Rings is still the one fantasy book to rule them all!

And you both forgot The Similarion! Without Morgoth Saurun would never have been corrupted into an evil being!

The Beowulf poem? One of my favorites! Totally out did Homer's epic!

Fair warning, most people find The Similarion to be a very boring and dull book. You need to look at it from a different view to really get it. It is one of Tolkien's greatest works because of the detail and depth and way that he wrote it. Read it as a work of art, rather than a book to be read before bed.

Actually, I'd direct you to a couple books by indie authors (most people who write Christian fiction for the big labels are lame) :

Heroes of Old by Jay Young - Urban fantasy. I thought it was very original. A tad X-Men like, but good for all that. There is a "hidden history" of the Biblical Noah and his descendants as well as a group called "The Faction" who have fought satanic forces through the ages. The members of the "Faction" change over millenia, but its mission remains the same. There were parts I really enjoyed and thought very original and entertaining. The story of "No" (short for Noah and the latest recuit of the Faction) was a bit tedious for me. As an adult, I was left desiring a little more, but a young person would enjoy it. A good read none the less.

In My Master's Hand by Joseph Gore - Traditional fantasy. No dragons, no elves. Book begins with a land already conquered from within by evil forces that worship darkness. Main character is an invincible warrior that has never been defeated, but can't be victorious because he fights a one-man war against darkness and it's servants. He can only win by becoming a tool in his Master's hand, as it were. It is definitely an adult work - bad stuff happens that little eyes probably should not read (not graphic, but frank). The female lead, for example, is raped before her rescue by the main character. There's no sugar-coating and, as an adult, I found that refreshing.
