My dad lived on a small farm and he had a German Shepard for a pet . The dog learned how to help with the hogs and the cows if they needed to be rounded up and moved and was very good at it .
A neighbor across the road knew the dog was good to help with the farm animals and he could whistle and call the dog and the dog would go across the road and help him with his farm animals .
My dad left the farm and joined the military . He talked with the neighbor a few years later and the neighbor told him the shepard had gotten older and when he called the dog to come across the road to help he didn't quit make it . The dog would come to the middle of the dirt road and look across and see what kind of trouble the neighbor was having and then turn around and go back home .
I am beginning to understand how the dog felt .
