Favorite Bible verse and why

What is your favorite bible verse? Keep it to one, and please do explain why it is your favorite.

Here is mine:
"My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing." James 1:2-4

During a very tough time in my life God showed me this passage, and I would read it everyday. It gave me strength.

What it means to me: Everyone is going to have a time in their life where things are hard, and your very faith my be tested. Have patience, and even look forward to hardships. When trials come into your life, overcome them, and know that because you have been tested, and succeeded, you will be stronger for it.

I used to be scared when I had to do something that test my limits physically, emotionally, and so on. I have been forced beyond my limits in many areas in my life. I now look forward to those situations (to a degree) knowing that I will truimph, and come out stronger. It is the difference between being afraid to run up a big hill because you know it is going to be hard and really test you, and choosing to run up the hill a couple times just to show the hill who the boss is. Knowing that I can push my limits, and having confidence in those situations means I can be strong for others and help them through if need be.

I really like this topic. Great idea. For me I've got 2 scriptures that have been a pivotal force in my life. I can't really bring it down to one verse they are related to me.

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6
This speaks to me on a lot of levels. It tells me that I may not always see or understand the path God is bringing me down. There may be times I cannot see the end of the road or why I'm going through thing that seem so difficult and painful. It tells me that I don't need to understand. It tells me that I'm free to trust God even if I have no idea what he's doing. And that's something that we can easily loose sight of. And lastly it tells me if I trust Him, then He will walk by my side, He will guide me even if unseen. It tells me I've got nothing to fear.

20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
Galations 2:20

This scripture is kinda the other end of the previous verse. It's a reminder to me that my life is not my own. That the fleshy man I that had existed was crucified on the cross with Jesus. It tells me I'm free to walk a path of faith even if I don't see the end result of my situation. And it shows me that the object of my Faith should be Jesus my Lord and Savior and not myself, my wife, friends or even Church. It tells me that Christ loved me so much he gave Himself for me, and in the darkest times, that rings true. If I have nothing else in life, I have the love of God and Christ Jesus. That love is enough.

I've found that the verse that means the most to you changes over time.

When I was just starting to grow in christ and I was a Freshmen in highschool leading a biblestudy for our youthgroup, my favorite verse was 1 Timothy 4:12. I didn't want anyone to be able to look down on me because I was young. Thanks to a Godly mentor or two, not many did.

When I was a Junior in High School, I became fond of Colossians 3:16. It was even my senior quote. I wanted to have everything I did wrapped up in Christ. As I worked in him I revived a dead faith group in high school into a steady group of 15 Christians working inside that high school. When a teacher tried to censor that verse as my senior quote, God gave me the strength to prepare a letter to the principle that was firm and made clear I had the right to use that verse. God was good to me because i sought to live for him.

When I got to college that verse changed again, and it still is Jeremiah 20:9. It speaks about the word of God being a burning fire caught up in my bones and I grow weary trying to hold it in. That's what I want to be. I do not want to be a Christian who hords the truth. Now everytime I join a new site online, my username gives me the chance to tell them about God's word. I've started and helped in Christian communities on IMVU, Nodiatis, Catalyst's Corner Forums, CF.com, MLB Trade Rumors, and many other sites. I figure as long as I am involved, why not put my faith out there for God to use.

I've always been told that it is important to find a passage that inspires you to live for God more.

It is likely not my place to share any bible verses here...but this one has been my favorite for some time.

Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

When I have found myself being plagued by any form of fear or doubt, this verse has truly helped me through. For God is indeed our comfort.

Not sure I have a Favorite verse.
Ephesians is my favorite book/letter and Hebrews 11 is my favorite overall passage/chapter.

I find it hard to think of just one verse that I love, and doing my "verse of the day" thread has taught me so much mroe about God and how the Bible speaks about Him and about how we should live in light of what Jesus did for us.

And I agree with Tim - my favourite verse(s) and books change over time.

At the moment my favourite verse is 1 Peter 1:3-9, but if I had to narrow it down it would probably be v3-4

3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you, 5who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

I love it because it encourages me and challenges me. It encourages me in my faith when I am feeling down, to keep going as I have a great inheritence! The second part for me is a great challenge to live in light of this inheritence that I have inherited.

Thank you Nick, my hubby and mom share the same bible verse that holds a particular fondness in the heart. Their favorite is:

Joshua 24:14-15"Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."

Always ask my husband why and he says: "It just suits."

That too is a great verse.

Another of my favourite is 1 Corinthians 13:4-8:

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

A great challenge I find is to replace the word "love" with your own name. See how true (or untrue) the passage now becomes. Goal is to improve on that. That really convicted me when someone challeged me to do that. It reminds me of the "fruits of the spirit passage in Galations 5:16-22:

16So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. 17For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.

19The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

My favorite verse is Philippians 2:12:

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,

I try to do the best I can by God and I really try to do what I think is right. I also think a lot of people don't have a healthy fear of God like they should.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28

It's been my life's verse. It increases my faith, and it helps me make sense out of the senseless. I've had to go through some pretty rough garbage in my life, and this verse has been proven again and again.

I also like psalms 23. I memorized it at a young age, and it has stuck with me. In times of trouble I run it through my head.
