Fear of death

Yet another strange thread of mine:dunno

Is it unbiblical to be afraid of death?

Peter was never afraid of death - he took 'holy' risks and God was with him. Most other figures in the bible never feared death 'even at the point of death'.

Matthew 10:39 NKJV

He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.

How do we reconcile this verse with the question?

So,

*Is it unbiblical to be afraid of death?
*Are you afraid of dying now? (You musn't answer this)

Ta!:salute

It is unbiblical to be afraid of ANYTHING, including death.

God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7)

Then why did you ask ?? :poke

Is there a fear that we could have that is not associated with this spirit that Paul is referring to?

huh?

So you are saying God does not give the spirit of fear, except for the fear of God?

this make no sense.

Do not confuse spirit of fear.. :scared :couch ... with fear of God.

The former, mainly instilled by the devil, takes away joy, hope and peace in a believer. The latter does the exact opposite. Fear of the Lord amounts to reverence and obedience to God which can only lead to joy, hope and peace .... :pray

I guess I should rephrase....

Is there any type of fear we might have that is not associated with this spirit of fear?

IE: I am a born again Christian, however I am afraid of heights.

Is the "fear" I have of heights have anything to do with the "spirit of fear"?

I too have a terrible fear of heights, which is why I never look down from my apartment windows ! :pray

Whenever angels appeared to people in the Bible, the first thing they said was "Fear not" or "Do not fear".

So I guess it's perfectly normal and natural for man for fear at certain point in our lives. But if this turns into prolonged and unreasonable fear, then it could be more than just meets the eye.

And no, I don't fear death. In fact, sometimes I do wish I could die early and go straight to heaven while I believe it's still possible than live a long life which is bound to be challenged by adversities that may or may not cause me to lose my salvation.

And when I die, I prefer to die in my sleep .... :sleep

thanks for your reply.

So I think it is possible that the fear of dying has nothing to do with this 'spirit of fear' as well.

However, if we let (insert fear here) overtake our minds and get in the way of our relationship with God, then there is a problem and this 'spirit' now has an open door to come in and take a foothold.

...and to answer the OP's question

I am not afraid of dying :)

I'm not afraid of death, just the manner of how that may come about.

ok, time to be honest. Yes I am totally petrified of death and dying. It haunts me and it's a major worry. Doesn't make any sense for someone who is a christian, right?:chin

yup i aint afraid of being dead its just the getting there...

I want the twinkling of an eye thing :yes

I'm not afraid of death, I'm afraid of getting a disease and slowly wasting away, or being murdered and someone taking enjoyment from my pain.

A bit twisted I know. But OP, I dont think you are afraid of death, but perhaps the pain associated? Jesus wasnt afraid to die on the cross, but he was afraid of the cup of God's wrath about to be poured out on him. Its okay to fear things, its a survival instinct God has given us, but when it comes to the things of God, such as what comes upon the resurrection..this is where we can rejoice!!

Great response indeed.

I wish I have the boldness the apostles had. They saw death; they continued working for the Master.
