I took keyboarding in high school, and they didn't make us actually type properly, so I just became very proficient in hunting the letters down. However, recently I've decided that since I'm begining to work with computers, it was time for me to learn how to type for real. Let me tell you, it's not easy. But I'm trying really hard to learn this stuff.

Have you learned how to type yet?

Yep. Between 6 and 8 grades. The teacher would stand over you with your keyboard blocked/covered and watched you type 30 wpm as a part of your final exam.

I kinda wished my teacher would have done something. I'm really trying hard to learn how to type.

I'm really glad that they did that. It has come in quite handy now. When I only have one hand available to type, I get frustrated trying to find the keys. We used to use this stupid keyboarding program with an animated key that would tell you what letter was found where and then it would call the hand to come and put it's fingers on the keys. Then you had individual practices where you would practice hitting just one key. I remember 30 minutes of just hitting the "S" key with my left ring finger. UGH! But I'm glad now that I have that capability.

I can identify with that. I learned to type at one of my highschools. It's the only thing that that school actually taught me, and I'm really glad they did. I remember sitting there hitting just 2 keys for 30 minutes and getting so frustrated with, but it worked. It is such a convenience to be able to type correctly because you don't have to stare at the keys. I've watched Tim type and he's very quick at 'hunting & pecking', but he's still somewhat limited because he has to watch what he's doing.

I can agree. I like to sit there and type an email while I'm watching the news or Project Runway or whatever.

It's been tough, but this weekend I got through the basic Home row and I'm getting closer to getting down the shift keys too.

Keep at it, it will soon become second nature. I had a hard time learning to type as well, I kept wanting to look at my fingers, a fatal mistake.

I took typing in High School at the same time I was a charter member of the high school drama club. My typing teacher always went to our plays and one time, after a less than stellar timed type test, he told me, "Dora, continue with your typing if you want to, but keep acting so you'll have something to fall back on." :-D

Guess what, I am a third of the way through my typing lessons and this message was typed without looking at the keyboard. It did take a minute or two though. :)

Keep at it, Tim! Strive for accuracy without looking and the speed will come. :smt023

I had to learn how to type in High School. Just so I could take the limited computer classes we had back then.(No Internet) We thought Fortran was the end all, be all of programming, lol.I used to be quick, about 60 wpm, but I fell out of practice doing construction for 16 years. Now though, I am a tech support representative, and am re-learning all the joys of typing. Most of the time I have to keep an eye on the keys, though.

I can type without looking sometimes, i typed this whole post without looking, but i am faster when i do look.

You see if I Look I am tempted to cheat or use the wrong fingers. Once I have this down I may start to look again.

That's what I need to do, learn to type. One finger all the way. But the way I figure it when this one wears out I'll still have nine left. :-D

Sooooo Tim,

Do you have some fun and rewarding typing software? My grand daughter is just learning and she enjoys "hunting and fishing" for letters, or going on a "trip round the world typing"... :D

Her software is called Typing Instructor Deluxe. It is set up to her speed and accuracy, it computes her areas of weakness too, and provides skill tests and games to move her along. She is at 25 wpm now accurately. she really likes knowing her progress, and its all part of her home schooling program.

I think you can get the software pretty inexpensively at any Office Supply store.

Hey~ how about starting a thread that tests the typing skills of its participants in the games forum?

Praying over your progress~ keep up the diligent work, brother. bonnie

Sweet, I'm not the only non-typing user around these parts. Let me tell you this stuff isn't easy to do sometimes. I am getting better at it though. This message took a little less to write.

I am now about half way through my typing courses, and I'm really starting to get the hang of this I think. :)
