How many think that John was eating real locust or some kind of plant in (Mark 1:6) and if not the plant, did The Old Testament declare the locust, clean to eat ? And also, who here would eat a locust, for the protein ?

I would have some beans. No locusts for me thank you. :lol
Considering all the junk in our food (and now that sugar is being used for fuel we will be snuck high fructose corn syrup left and right) it is helpful to know what natural foods were consumed back then.

Very interesting

Thanks Lewis :salute

People back then did not die of many of the diseases that we die from today, some of them, but nothing like today, our diet is totally out the window.

I'm sure the clean diets of that day had something to do with the longer life span as well. Nowadays it seems to cost more to eat healthy, so a lot of folks compromise to the not so healthy snacks. :sad

Most likely has to do with the pesticides, growth hormones and other chemicals added to our food than the types of food consumed.

I would try one, considering it was the type of locust the bible talked about. However, I do not know enough about insects to know the difference. I understand that they are rich in protein and a considerable food source.

I also eat cholesterol-rich foods according to the bible as we now know that cholesterol is a precursor of vitamin D3. These of course are clean meats of various sources and eggs. I don't know my cholesterol level as I believe that health teaching is false doctrine. A valuable and life-giving and holy substance has been deemed by man (and the Antichrist system) to be non-kosher and something to be avoided. This is one reason why we pray for people in our church with health maladies (from the deficiency) such as heart disease, cancer, arthritis, nervous conditions, and so forth.

To keep things in perspective, we cannot solely blame diet. The atmosphere is severely polluted, our water is polluted (fish readily absorb toxins), the soil is polluted, and we are inundated with various rays of radiation everywhere we go (radio, TV, GPS, electrical fields, etc.). We are continuously exposed to things ancient peoples were not. Of course, our food could also be considered polluted with so many of the chemicals that are put in there, but it's one factor among many.

Just my guess but I'd have to say he probably was indeed eating the bug. The word Locust is used enough times in scripture that it was probably not mistranslated and in every other usage I believe it referes to the famous bug. The plant Locust is a member of the Robina family and it is native to North America I don't know of any Robina native to the mideast or North Aferica. At least one varity of Locust, the black Lotus is poisionous. People still eat Locust (the bug) today so odds are good they also ate them in Johns time.

Is it "clean"? That one would require more research but I'm thinking if John ate it probably. Would I eat it? If I was hungry enough I would but I'd probably pass if it was on a buffet. :lol

Hi Joe,

Leviticus 21. However, among all the flying insects that walk on four [legs], you may eat [from] those that have jointed [leg like] extensions above its [regular] legs, with which they hop on the ground.
22. From this [locust] category, you may eat the following: The red locust after its species, the yellow locust after its species, the spotted gray locust after its species and the white locust after its species.
23. But any [other] flying insect that has four legs, is an abomination for you.

Yum yum, eat up! However, I guess that makes gnats unclean, got a strainer, don't want no gnat in our wine now! :lol

Lewis,
Chances are pretty strong that John ate both a variety of grasshoppers as outlined above (to include crickets) as well as carob from the locust trees that are still in abundance within the region John traveled.

P.S. A grasshopper wouldn't be the first thing on my plate, and if it were on my plate, it would be the last thing on my plate :D

While I said that certain insects are clean and "I would try one", the only thing to consider is that they did not have the pesticides and insecticides then like they do now. I would definitely make sure it was a seemingly healthy one first and limit my diet on them. Reminds me of the cat that eats the poisoned mouse---- mice are OK for cats, but not if they ate poison.

You left gazelle (roe) off the list. :distorted Or am I part of the venison category???

Worms are high in protein, and like tofu, take on the taste of whatever else is in the pan! :)

mmmm ;) Vinegar is good to use to help balance stomach acids. If someone has gerd or sour belches... it could be that they don't have enough stomach acid... taking a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar will settle the stomach if that is the problem (it may take 30 seconds or so to settle it though...). Taking antacids don't solve the problem but make it worse, by removing all acids in the stomach. We have to have some! LOL:chin

Vinegar! How counter intuitive is that?! Who would have thunk it?

Thanks for the list Lewis. Not to boast, but have nearly all of those foods pretty regularly! I was surprised! I just like simple, old fashioned foods. I try to eat only foods as they were had 100 years ago. Less processed = better. I often joke that the makers of low calorie, low fat, diet foods add chemicals to make folks fat. It’s good for business!

I’ve taken to buying grains at the beer brewing store and cooking them up every day in a thermos for work. They have lots of different grains, even rolled rye and spelt!. I do it all winter. It’s cheap and delicious.

A healthful diet can be affordable. Really, it costs an awful lot to over-eat, and that is easily the worst dietary habit in the U.S. The cost of better ingredients is more than offset by smaller portions.

I would eat the bugs only if they were very cooked. I might eat more if they were salty, crunchy, porkrindish, soy sauce on ‘em, good - less if they were soft, bad-egg, soft inside, sour, strange cheese like…
