For physical exercise is of limited value, but godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for the present life and for the one to come. Berean Literal Bible For bodily exercise is of a little profit, but godliness is profitable for everything, holding the promise of the present life and of the one coming. 1 Timothy 4:8

for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. - What is the meaning of 1 Timothy 4:8?

Many discipline the body (flesh) to keep it in shape, but neglect the shape of the Spiritual body that is to be the temple of God

Just as a heads up... unrelated

Sedentary lifestyles are more deadly than smoking while in kidney failure.

Very true as sitting all the time can break the body down. That's one of my problems since I had both knees and hips replaced as I'm not as active as I was when I was working as I literally can not do the things I use to be very active in. I do get up and keep myself busy around the house and the yard and that helps.

in context we would need to remember that
1. most people walked everywhere at that time - even long distances
2. the olympic style shows of wrestling and running were popular among the greeks
3. paul didn't say of NO value - he said of a little measure of value

i see it as a comparison - like Jesus said HATE your mother father etc and love God - that is a comparison - Jesus was not asking us to hate our mothers and fathers etc

so imo paul was saying EVERYONE in his day (and ours) KNOWS physical exercise does have value/benefit - it's scientifically proven - BUT Godliness has infinitesimally HUGE benefit
