I'm not sure what the RCC teaches on this, but I think you may have misunderstood me, in that I do not think - for the person redeemed by God through Christ - sin has any affect on the righteousness they have received via the Gospel. This is the righteousness through faith that gives them the freedom to enter God's presence boldly at any time and call him Abba.so, hospes...sort of like how the RCC sets some sins as breaking the believer apart from fellowship until confessed? I'm not saying the RCC is the one true church, but sometimes I think they've got things to teach us Protestants...
When I listen to some people speak on 1 John 1:9-10, I get the image they see confession as some type of soap with which to cleanse themselves from sin that has damaged their acceptance by God they received by grace through the Gospel. My point is there is NOTHING that can damage this gift of grace. When Jesus washed his disciples feet, he said something interesting to Peter:
...“The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, ...” (John 13:10 ESV)
BTW, I agree there is some things we can benefit from learning from our Catholic brethren.
