Forgiveness:

Forgiveness for some of us is a difficult and uncomfortable topic. Sometimes it may feel like a taboo to bring it up, but it is a critical concept to understand.

Forgiveness is a verb, it is something we do. It is not something that happens without an action.

In Matthew 6:14-15 it reads, "For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins."

Most of us probably will not say this is our favorite Bible verse. Reading this can feel downright convicting!

Another good verse about forgiveness is Colossians 3:13, which reminds us, "Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you."

This verse is pretty heavy, but is a great reminder that Jesus Christ died for our sins when we didn't deserve it. We are saved by His grace! If Jesus Christ can forgive us then it is possible for us to forgive others.

Now, I know what you may be thinking, "But this is just too hard! You don't understand! You have no idea what that person did to me!"

I am totally right there with you. We all have been there. We are told in Romans 12:2, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - His good, pleasing will."

We are reminded that we are not of this world. We are called to act differently and behave differently than the world does. Jesus came to this world and showed us through physical limitation that it can be done!

May I remind you that forgiving does not mean forgetting. We have probably all heard, "Forgive and forget." It is such a common phrase, but this is not in the Bible. We can forgive, but this does not mean forgetting is a requirement. Forgiveness is not a sign of weakness. Forgiveness does not mean we have to be that
person's friend. Forgiveness does not mean to stick around and take someone else's abusive or toxic behavior. Forgiveness does not mean that we are promoting the behavior of the other person. Sometimes we even need to forgive ourselves.

Only forgive when you mean it, and do find it in your heart to forgive through meditation upon scripture and prayer. Remember we all have the same human condition of sin, and we are imperfect. We are all in nees of forgiveness and for this we need to forgive others.

Here is my challenge:
-Over these next couple weeks think of someone that did something that you have not forgiven them for. Pray, meditate on scripture, and find it in your heart to forgive. It does take time, but start today!

BIG challenge being in the ministry i have had a few encounters one i was burnt by a friend who was a brother..it was more of a hurt..have i forgiven yes i have i forgot no. i do not trust him in the ministry work. life is tough and at some point all will have to face a person to forgive... i have seen bitterness come out of Christians

Yes, it seems like one of the hardest things. Sometimes it seems unthinkable to forgive. Of course ministry decisions regarding who has which roles im a church must be decided carefully and with prayer and some roles are not fit for everyome, I totally understand that one.

I think forgiving a brother or sister in Christ is hard because we think, "But they knew better." Not easy one bit.

OK. This -is- a challenge, but...I'm on it! Praying...and....thanks!

You're welcome and yes, a challenge even for me and my situations! I will surely be working on this, too!

I suppose medical miracles can be convicting to others. Many want to push God to side and ignore Him.

Whole hearted forgiveness is not easy when we allow the flesh to fester that of what others have done to us. This is when we need to walk in the Holy Spirit to know if we do not whole hardheartedly forgive God will not forgive us our trespasses.

As humans we will never forget what was done to us, but we do need to walk in a better place like Jesus said "Father forgive them for they know not what they do. Another good scripture on forgiveness is Mark 11:23-26.

this is hard for me. i was electroshocked and operated on by psychiatrists...then sexually exploited and left to grow sick with untreated HIV/AIDS. and now...

im healthy! I'm surprisingly intelligent! 0 treatment for HIV, healthier than ever! not pursuing the gay life, 0 drugs, etc., and...

i don't know. im getting sick of holding onto un-forgiveness,but there's the very -real- fact in mah face: they don't care. they didn't care then, they don't care now, if anything...The Lord's work in my heart+life rubs them the wrong way.

its extra-difficult because its always somehow the patient's fault. "severe personality disorder." "non-compliant." "unemployed." blah blah blah...always, always, always a reason to belittle, label, stigmatize, and punish people/patients like me...

and now...my parents aren't rich, but they're high status enough that..with their love and support...i dont get messed over as much. so, God is good! I've been forgiven, washed+made clean, blessed...but it gets rough, at times....

i dunno. this is...rough. no one said following Christ would be 110% easy. how do I forgive when I was subjected to so much, even my parents were plotted against (some townies tried to get mama fired, in part because of the "professionals"), and...

they're so vicious, they'd do it all over again and then some, if it wasn't for Jesus? blah. :-(

When they murdered Jesus, after torturing Him, they didn't care. They accused our precious Lord of all manner of things. They cared so little that they cast lots for His clothes and ridiculed Him, as He hung on the cross. And He loved them and asked the Father to forgive them. That is definitely a hard act to follow. As far as we are able we have to follow that. Not easy!

Definitely! It is never easy. It seems forgiveness is such a common theme. I think about Jacob and Esau as well as Joseph and his brothers as some examples, too.

It is unimaginable to think how Christ being in such agony could still forgive!

Yes, but He showed us the way by His example that we are commanded to follow in. I believe this is a matter of faith. Do we believe the way of Jesus is the best possible way to live?
Are we willing to trust Him, like Peter did when he stepped out of the boat. If we can muster that kind of faith, then we have to believe that if we stumble in our faith while trying to be obedient, Jesus will save us from drowning.

Having faith can be scary at times...

Having faith can be very scary. But if we step out in faith we can be amazed what God will do. The result is that our faith is strengthened and grows. It's like that true saying 'use your faith or else you will lose it.' Not easy though. I believe if we step out in faith it will become easier the more we do it. I pray for courage.I am not a brave person. Perhaps we just have to go ahead and not even think what the dangers could be - just ask the Holy Spirit to be with us and work through us.

This reminds me of a faith exercise where you learn to trust someone by having them stand behind you as you fall backwards and hope they will catch you. Faith and hope is that of Christ who will always catch us when we fall.

For_His_Glory I remember that game, I think I hoped more than trusted. :lol
