Bible Study Given over to own devices

Psalm 81:10-12 Amplified Bible (AMP)
10 I am the Lord your God, Who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.

11 But My people would not hearken to My voice, and Israel would have none of Me.

12 So I gave them up to their own hearts’ lust and let them go after their own stubborn will, that they might follow their own counsels.

If we don't listen to God, and choose something else instead of him, he will give us over to our carnal behaviors. Reminds me of in the OT Israel was starving for meat so God sent them so much meat they ate all until they were sick. (Numbers 11) I personally believe that habitual sin keeps you from entering God's blessing. Two steps I have taken this year personally are bettering me spiritually more than I thought. These days Im pursuing another area of my life where I can be in complete submission and just throw away the thing that is causing me mental stress. So, if you are struggling with habitual sin, its time to turn your back on it and turn towards God.

When we don't own up to our weaknesses/sins, it's like walking into a brick wall, bouncing back a step or two, and then walking into the brick wall again, and repeating this action. Once we admit the sin(s), an open door replaces that brick wall, and we're able to proceed onward in our growing maturity in our personal relationship with our Lord.

Pride. The world is full of it.And that includes professed Christians.

It is also very important to remember that the environment we, ourselves, create within our local church, has a lot to do with whether or not people feel the safe freedom to admit faults. A "legalistic" attitude among the congregants stifles openness, and makes it much more difficult to let ourselves be less-than-perfect.

In the Bible, giving this freedom is called, "LOVE".

"Given over to our own devices"?
Like, smart phone addiction? :biggrin
This is one of the reasons the KJV is such a poor translation to try and base doctrine upon. In this case the meaning of "desire" or "inclination" is not one we use much anymore.

Maybe what it actually meant was vices instead of devices?
Never heard the word device in a context where it means "desire". It's hard to understand if you don't know it can mean that.
That's why the KJV is such a poor translation for clueless foreigners (like me). ;-)

no old English is better, we have devices.we do devise our demise in our lusts for things and sin.
