God Is Soooo Out Of Touch

Is satire Godly?

Eph 5:3-14
But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light.
Therefore it says,
“Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.

I can think of many different ways of exposing the works of darkness than satire.

God uses lots of satire and dry humor. He has used these forms of humor regularly and often throughout scripture. From Old to New. From the plague of frogs (Heckqt worship to protect their children) to asking Phillip for a place to purchase bread during the feeding of 5000. All instances of dry wit humor. There's a lot of instances of this sort of humor and more in scriptures.

I get humor, but not satire. I think God is broken over the stupidity of the foolish, not a God who ridicules them.

I'm not saying that its serious business 100% of the time(even though we should count the days as short), but satire - especially when it involves God Almighty - the Holy God - just does not seem right in any stretch of the imagination.

When you have to think to get the joke...it's ok.

Can you imagine Moses asking Pharaoh if he likes frogs? Heqt was the frog goddess who protected her babies with slime. The same river she resided in was where the Hebrew babies were supposed to be thrown. Which the whole country came to not love any longer.

Then there's the story of Baalam who was supposed to be able to tell the future from the entrails of a donkey...and the one he was riding started talking to him.

All instances strong satire and dry wit...just like the article. And there's many more stories like this in scripture.

Paul, Miciah, and others were known for extreme sarcasm. Jesus himself used it on numerous occasions. Most of the understanding is lost in translation and culture but it's hilarious.

To think that humor is wrong when dealing with spiritual matters is to completely ignore the reward of Heaven where we are so happy that we laugh till tears run down our faces.

I honestly do not see those as examples of satire. Satire would mean there is some pleasure involved. God did not have pleasure in those instances.

Ezekiel 33:11 (ESV)
Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?

The beauty of different threads is your not obligated to read the ones you don't like or find particularly interesting. I'm pretty sure most posters on this thread don't have a problem with the OP or the site. It's funny.

Don't major in minors.

There are a lot of things that a lot of people don't have problems with. That doesn't mean we sit around and tell everyone to do what's right in their own eyes. Love is patient, kind, and it does not rejoice in evil but in the truth.

There is a difference between humor and mockery. There is nothing wrong with discussing the difference right?

The Prophets of Baal Defeated
1Ki 18:20 So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel.
1Ki 18:21 And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word.
1Ki 18:22 Then Elijah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left a prophet of the LORD, but Baal's prophets are 450 men.
1Ki 18:23 Let two bulls be given to us, and let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. And I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood and put no fire to it.
1Ki 18:24 And you call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the LORD, and the God who answers by fire, he is God.” And all the people answered, “It is well spoken.”
1Ki 18:25 Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many, and call upon the name of your god, but put no fire to it.”
1Ki 18:26 And they took the bull that was given them, and they prepared it and called upon the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped around the altar that they had made.
1Ki 18:27 And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.”
1Ki 18:28 And they cried aloud and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them.
1Ki 18:29 And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention.
1Ki 18:30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been thrown down.
1Ki 18:31 Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD came, saying, “Israel shall be your name,”
1Ki 18:32 and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD. And he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two seahs of seed.
1Ki 18:33 And he put the wood in order and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, “Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.”
1Ki 18:34 And he said, “Do it a second time.” And they did it a second time. And he said, “Do it a third time.” And they did it a third time.
1Ki 18:35 And the water ran around the altar and filled the trench also with water.
1Ki 18:36 And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.
1Ki 18:37 Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that this people may know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.”
1Ki 18:38 Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
1Ki 18:39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, “The LORD, he is God; the LORD, he is God.”
1Ki 18:40 And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape.” And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slaughtered them there.

Elijah mocked the false prophets using their God as a centerpiece. The article in the OP uses our God as the centerpiece.

It's disgusting. I am voicing my opinion of it. It others enjoy it, that's between them and the Lord. I'm simply stating it's not right.

He used our God as his centerpiece as the chapter shows (drawing the people near to him). He mocked the priests for their stupidity in believing in a god made by their own hands.

No, there is nowhere that he used God as the centerpiece of mockery. Elijah was very reverent when speaking of His God. The OP article is not.
